Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 9,550 fans in their season finale. The P-Bruins received goals from Yury Alexandrov, Ryan Spooner and Carter Camper.
In their final game of the season, the P-Bruins didn't hold anything back as they took on the second-seeded team in the Atlantic. Providence got on the board four minutes in when Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman found Alexandrov at the right point. Alexandrov's shot made it through traffic and past a screened Jeff Zatkoff for his sixth goal of the year. Trent Whitfield also assisted on the opening goal. After a few key saves from Anton Khudobin, the P-Bruins got on the board again at 9:42 of the first when Providence College product Kyle MacKinnon found Spooner crashing in the slot. Manchester's frustrations began to rise, but Providence was undeterred and answered on the scoreboard at 13:20 to take a 3-0 lead. A rebound from a Maxime Sauvé shot sat on the goal line before Camper tipped it home for his first career professional goal. Adam Estoclet picked up a helper on the play to send the P-Bruins into the first intermission leading 3-0.
Manchester answered early in the second frame when Tyler Toffoli tallied the first goal of his professional career at 3:28 of the period in his pro debut. After an onslaught of penalties midway through the period, Providence began to create offensive opportunities, seeing a 2-on-1 from rookies Spooner and Ryan Button, as well as a breakaway from MacKinnon. However, Zatkoff denied each attempt, sending the P-Bruins into the locker room with a 3-1 lead.
Despite strong offensive play from the P-Bruins early in the third period, the Monarchs found the back of the net at 9:01 of the frame to come within one. Play started to get chippy halfway through the frame, with both teams seeing significant time in the penalty box and two players leave the play with misconducts. With little offensive opportunities, the P-Bruins' defensive play and Khudobin shined as the Monarchs made a last effort to tie the game, out-shooting Providence 25-8. However, a late 6-on-5 opportunity from Manchester was rebuffed by Khudobin, giving the P-Bruins a 3-2 win in their season finale.
Khudobin earned the win, stopping 41 attempts. Zatkoff suffered the loss, blocking 27 of 30 shots.
