Providence Bruins News Release
PORTLAND, ME. - The Providence Bruins fell to the Portland Pirates 3-2 in overtime at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine. Ian White and Craig Cunningham each registered a goal and an assist for Providence in the loss.
Despite being out shot 20-3, the Providence Bruins managed to come out of the first period tied at 1 with Portland. The P-Bruins kicked off the scoring on the powerplay when Craig Cunningham tallied his fourth goal of the season at 14:14 of the period. Ian White and Ryan Spooner were credited with the assists. Portland center Alexandre Bolduc was able to even things up at 1-1 when he snuck one by P-Bruins goaltender Jeremy Smith who, despite the goal, stood tall during the period to stop 19 of the 20 shots he faced.
Shots on goal weren't as lopsided in the second, with the Pirates outshooting Providence 11-10. Henrik Samuelsson scored for Portland at 5:37, assisted by Bolduc and Martinook, to put Portland up 2-1. That lead would hold until 16:25 in the period, when P-Bruins Defenseman Ian White beat Portland Goaltender Mike McKenna with his first goal of the season to tie things up. Alexander Khokhlachev and Craig Cunningham assisted on the powerplay goal.
The score remained tied at 2 well into the third period, with each team failing to capitalize on mutliple powerplay opportunities. Just 1:36 into the overtime period, Portland defenseman Evan Oberg beat P-Bruins goaltender Jeremy Smith with the game winner. The goal was Oberg's fourth of the season, assisted by Gaudet and Trivino, as the Pirates won by a final score of 3-2.
