Springfield Falcons News Release
Worcester, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons edged the Worcester Sharks, 3-2, in overtime tonight at the DCU Center to advance to an eight-game winning streak.
The victory maintains the Falcons' control of both the Northeast Division and Eastern Conference with 29 points and increases the team to 14-7-1-0 on the season. Springfield also takes a 2-1-0-0 lead in the six-game season series against Worcester. The Sharks continue to a six-game losing streak and move to 8-8-2-0 on the season.
Falcons goaltender Anton Forsberg extends his winning streak to seven games, stopping 33 of 35 shots. Sharks netminder Aaron Dell turned away 22 of 25. Springfield saw no power play opportunities, but were successful in stopping all five Worcester man-advantages.
Springfield opened scoring just 3:17 into the contest and held a 1-0 lead through the first period. Corey Cowick forced a turnover behind the Sharks' net and sent the puck out to Mathieu Gagnon in the slot. Gagnon fired a shot on Dell that beat him low glove side for his first goal of the season.
The Sharks evened the score at the 2:27 mark of the second period. After winning the face-off, Gus Young and Taylor Fedun passed back and forth along the blue line. Young fired a shot from the left point that was tipped by Evan Trupp in the crease to knot the teams, 1-1.
The Sharks took over the lead 26 seconds into the third period, but the Falcons tied it again 35 seconds later, eventually forcing overtime. With Forsberg playing the puck behind the cage, Melker Karlsson netted a shot on an open goal with the help of Chris Tierney and Matt Taormina. The Falcons quickly responded, setting up an opportunity for Marko Dano to pot his second goal of the season from the right point. Austin Madaisky earned credit for the assist.
The Falcons secured their 3-2 victory 2:42 into the overtime frame. Sean Collins passed ahead to T.J. Tynan, who carried the puck into the offensive zone. A cross-slot pass set up Nathan Oystrick to score the game-winner from the left circle.
