Oberg Delivers Win with OT Goal

Portland, ME- The Portland Pirates (11-9-0-0) had a lot to be thankful for Friday night at the Cross Insurance Arena when they beat the Providence Bruins (9-9-1-0) 3-2 in overtime. The game ended in ties in each of the three regulation periods, with the game knotted at 1 after the first and 2 after the second and third periods. The game winning goal game came from Pirates defenseman Evan Oberg at 1:36 in the overtime period. Portland has scored on both overtime shots they've taken this season.

The Bruins drew first blood, with a power play goal from Craig Cunningham at 14:14 in the first, assisted by Ian White and Ryan Spooner. The Pirates answered back at with exactly one minute left in the period when Alex Bolduc found the back of the net, assisted by Jordan Martinook and Dylan Reese.

Henrik Samuelsson netted the go-ahead goal for the Pirates at 5:37 in the second period, with Martinook and Bolduc both picking up assists and their second points of the night. White evened the score for the Bruins at 16:25 on a power play goal assisted by Alexander Khokhlachev and Cunningham. The game stayed even through the final period of regulation.

Oberg's goal came just over a minute and a half into the sudden-death overtime period. Oberg was assisted by rookies Tyler Gaudet and Corey Trivino.

It was a banner night for the Pirates in shots on goal, putting up 20 of them after the first period alone. The final shots tally was 39-27 in favor of Portland. Mike McKenna (6-7-0) recorded the win, blocking 25 out of 27 shots faced. Jeremy Smith manned the net for the Bruins, stopping 36 pucks.

The Pirates play at home again Tuesday, December 2 at 7 p.m. against the Worcester Sharks. This game is the make-up of Wednesday's postponement due to inclement weather.
