Bridgeport Islanders News Release
Manchester, N.H. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers winless streak reached five games on Friday night as they were defeated by the Manchester Monarchs, 3-2 in overtime at the Verizon Wireless Center in Manchester, N.H..
Nic Dowd ended the game as his shot, the 50 th of the night for the Monarchs, found the back of the net during the 3-on-3 portion of overtime.
The Sound Tigers trailed for most of the game until their power play helped turn a 2-0 third period deficit into a tie game in the blink of an eye.
Colin McDonald scored his fifth goal of the season, a power play goal, to help cut the lead to 2-1 with less than seven minutes gone by in the 3rd.
With the momentum earned from the power play goal, It would only take 28 seconds for Bridgeport to tie the game. Harry Zolnierczyk was able to get behind the defense, go in alone on net and score his seventh goal of the season to make it 2-2.
The game headed to overtime but not without some controversy as the Monarchs thought they had scored the go-ahead goal with 50 seconds left.
The call on the ice though was no goal and when the play was reviewed, the replay confirmed the call of the ice by referee Fred Leblanc.
Kevin Poulin, who earned the second star of the game with 47 saves, was strong in net throughout the game and especially during overtime but he could not stop Dowd to keep the game going.
After a scoreless first period, the Monarchs got on the board early as Zach O'Brien found the back of the net less than two minutes into the second period.
Justin Auger would extend the Monarchs lead early on in the third frame as he was able to get to the net and beat Poulin to make it 2-0.
Jean-Francois Berube made 25 saves in the winning effort for the Monarchs. He now has 10 wins on the season and seven wins in his past eight games.
The Sound Tigers are back in action tomorrow at Webster Bank Arena as they welcome in their Nutmeg State rivals, the Hartford Wolf Pack, for another Northeast Division battle at 7 p.m.
Notes: The Sound Tigers have not won in Manchester since a 5-2 victory over the Monarchs on November 9 th, 2012... Kael Mouillierat notched his team leading 13 th assist of the season when he got the secondary assist on the McDonald goal... The 50 shots by the Monarchs are the most allowed by the Sound Tigers this season.
