Manchester Monarchs News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Three power play goals down the Manchester Monarchs in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Norfolk Admirals in front of 2,439 fans at the Norfolk Scope on Tuesday night.
Manchester (7-6-4-1) is in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 19 points. Norfolk (13-2-1-1) leads the East Division with 28 points.
The Admirals struck first with a power play goal at 10:30 of the first period. Defenseman Dustin Byfuglien collected a pass in the left face-off circle from right wing Brandon Bochenski. Byfuglien fired a shot on Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera from the top of the circle and the netminder made the pad save. The puck bounced free to the right of the net and center Martin St. Pierre was waiting there to flip in the rebound, his sixth tally of the season.
Power play goal No. 2 came at 6:52 of the middle period. Cycling the puck in the Monarchs zone, defenseman Danny Richmond sent a slap shot sailing into the top right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Right wing Matt Keith and center David Bolland earned assists on the second goal of the night.
Monarchs left wing Matt Moulson cut the Admirals lead in half at 15:27 of the second period with his fifth tally of the season. Right wing John Zeiler's shot was stopped but Moulson was on the edge of the crease to tap in the rebound for a 2-1 game.
Defenseman Joey Mormina blasted in his first professional goal at the 11:03 mark of the third period to tie the game at 2-2. Moulson fought off an Admirals attacker and passed the puck over to Mormina who one-timed it past Norfolk goaltender Corey Crawford. Zeiler earned his second assist of the night on the play.
Bochenski scored the overtime game-winning power play goal off a one-timer from the top of the left face-off circle at the 58-second mark of the overtime. Defenseman Cam Barker and St. Pierre assisted on the winning tally.
LaBarbera took the overtime loss stopping 21 of 24 shots. Crawford earned the victory with 21 saves.
Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Norfolk was 3-for-5 with the man advantage.
