Toronto Marlies News Release
THE OPPONENTS:
SYRACUSE CRUNCH
The Marlies battle the Syracuse Crunch - AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets - in a home-and-home series beginning Friday evening at the War Memorial at Oncenter in Syracuse. The Crunch, 4-11-0-1, sits three points behind Toronto for fifth place in the AHL's North Division standings. They host the Iowa Stars for the first time in their history on Wednesday evening before concluding the week with back-to-back games versus Toronto. Despite having won only four of their first 16 games, the team had won two straight before falling to Manitoba by a 1-0 score last Saturday. Toronto is in the midst of a franchise high six game winless streak and are coming off a disappointing 0-2-0-1 road swing through the New England area last week. Robbie Earl was the lone Marlie to record more than one point on the three game trip. Toronto is 2-6-1 on home-ice this season, 1-4-0 versus North Division opponents and 1-0-0 versus Syracuse. Leading the Crunch in scoring through 16 games is: (C) Geoff Platt (9g-4a=13pts). In addition to 13 games played with Syracuse this season, the Toronto native has also played two games for Columbus, recording two penalty minutes. Ty Conklin has been between the pipes on 10 occasions for the Crunch this year and has a record of 2-6-1 with a 3.45 GAA and a 0.894 save percentage. Notables: The Crunch features only two players with more than three goals this season. In addition to Platt, Alexandre Picard has five goals and nine points on the campaign. Picard was selected eighth overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft in Raleigh, NC. The Marlies defeated the Crunch 5-2 for their first win in franchise history on October 12, 2005 at Ricoh Coliseum. Current Marlie Brad Leeb had the game winning goal in that contest while defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo scored the team's first home-ice marker. Toronto won last year's season series 4-2-0-2 despite trailing 1-2-0 after three contests. Goaltender Jean-Francois Racine earned his twentieth victory (and first shutout) with the Marlies when last the teams met on October 6. Racine is the franchise's all-time wins leader. Six different goal scorers (Westrum, Engelhardt, Tlusty, Newbury, Fussey, D'Amour) scored in helping Toronto take a 1-0 regular-season series lead over the Crunch. Saturday's contest marks the third of eight meetings between the clubs this season.
ROCHESTER AMERICANS
Toronto hosts the Rochester Americans - AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres & Florida Panthers - on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Amerks currently sit atop the North Division standings with 28 points and have won 14 of their first 15 games. The lone blemish to their sparkling 14-1-0 record came in a 5-0 shutout loss at Syracuse on October 27. The win for the Crunch was their first of the season. They had been 0-6-0 to that point. Sunday's contest marks the second of 10 regular season meetings between the clubs this season. Rochester emerged with a 3-1 victory over the Marlies when last the teams met on October 21 at Ricoh Coliseum. Brad Leeb had given the home-side a brief 1-0 lead before Dylan Hunter, Drew Stafford and Anthony Stewart replied for the visitors. Adam Dennis turned aside 27 shots in earning a shutout victory as Rochester got past Springfield 8-0 on Saturday evening at Blue Cross Arena. Six Amerks had multi-point games. Captain Brandon Smith had four assists and registered a +3 rating. Leading the Americans in scoring through 15 games is: (LW) Clarke MacArthur (9g-7a=16pts). MacArthur is tied with fellow (LW) Michael Ryan for the team lead in goals with nine. Former London Knight Adam Dennis has started six games for Rochester this season and has a record of 5-1-0 with a 2.00 GAA and a 0.944 save percentage. Craig Anderson (5-0-0) and Jean-Marc Pelletier (4-0-0) have also seen time in the Amerks' goal. Notables: Rochester will host West Division opponents Milwaukee (Wednesday) and Iowa (Friday) before battling the Bulldogs at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton on Saturday evening. Colin Murphy scored the first goal in team history on October 7 of last season at Rochester's Blue Cross Arena. The teams will meet in upstate New York for the first time on December 22nd. Sunday's game is the second of 10 games between the clubs this year.
CCM/VECTOR AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE
For the week ending November 19th, 2006, the Toronto Marlies have nominated LW Robbie Earl for consideration as the CCM/Vector AHL Player of the Week. Earl notched the first multi-point game of his professional career in recording two assists in last Saturday's 3-2 SO loss at Springfield. This week's award was ultimately won by Bridgeport's Robert Nilsson.
MARLIES IN THE COMMUNITY
Once again this season, the Marlies are embarking on their Safe Schools campaign to promote an anti-bullying message to young students across Toronto. On Wednesday, November 22nd, Marlies defenceman Jaime Sifers, along with forward Alex Foster will appear at Sts. Martha and Mary Catholic School (1760 Bough Beeches Road, Mississauga) to continue this season's school visits. On Tuesday evening, the entire Marlies team will participate in their first "Marlies in the Community" practice of the season when they take to the ice at Agincourt Community Centre in Scarborough.

MARLIES NOTES
** Marlies' captain Marc Moro scored his second goal of the season in Wednesday's 4-2 loss at Manchester. The Toronto native is one goal shy of matching his AHL career-high of three, set in 2002-03 with the St. John's Maple Leafs. Moro is one of five Marlies to appear in all 17 games to date. He registered eight points (eight assists) in 73 games with the team last season.
** Marlies' forward John Mitchell scored his first goal of the season on Friday night at Springfield. A former captain of the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers, Mitchell was turned aside on a penalty shot attempt versus Manchester's Jason LaBarbera two nights earlier in New Hampshire.
** Former University of Wisconsin Badger Robbie Earl tallied the first multi-point game of his professional career in Friday's 3-2 shootout loss at Springfield. Earl was the lone Marlie to record more than one point in an otherwise disappointing trip through the New England area as Toronto garnered only one of a possible six points in the standings last weekend.
