Otters Rally Back Multiple Times for 5-4 Win
July 7, 2013 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
The Evansville Otters (24-19) won a see-saw series finale against the Washington Wild Things 5-4 on Sunday night.
Outfielder C.J. Henry hit a go-ahead RBI triple in the fifth and the eventual game-winning home run in the eighth.
Closer Eric Massingham worked around a two-on, no out jam in the ninth to preserve the win, helping Evansville win back to back games and the series.
Evansville leapt ahead first in the game. Facing pitcher Shawn Sanford, the Otters got a leadoff walk from Frank Martinez to begin the second inning. Infielder Steve Marino then hit a double to center field that was misplayed by outfielder Darian Sandford and helped score Martinez. Evansville added an RBI single from designated hitter J.R. Higley for the 2-0 edge.
Washington responded with a second inning home run to pull within a run and a game-tying homer from Stewart Ijames in the fifth.
Tied at two, Henry's triple elevated Evansville for a 3-2 lead in the fifth only to see Washington tie the game in the seventh. The Wild Things put two men on base and an infield error helped the Wild Things even up the score at three.
Newcomer Ricardo Lizcano hit a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the seventh only to see Washington re-tie the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth.
Henry's eighth inning home run proved to be the game winner as Massingham finished off the Wild Things in the ninth.
Starter Ryan Zamorsky did not factor in to the decision despite allowing just five hits in 7.0 innings. He allowed just three runs (two earned) in the Otters win.
The Evansville Otters are off on both Monday and Tuesday before beginning a six game road trip at the Florence Freedom. Evansville will have right-hander Bryce Morrow (6-1, 2.14 ERA) matching up against righty Dan Jensen (4-2, 3.10 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 pm EDT. Fans can tune in to the Evansville Otters pregame show on WUEV beginning at 6:15 pm EDT.
