Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers fell in a close contest at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday evening, dropping the series finale to the Rockford Aviators, 2-1.
The loss for Lake Erie (21-23) was their fourth in six games against Rockford this season. The win for the Aviators (14-30) marked their first series victory on the road this year.
Rockford right hander Seafth Howe (2-3) didn't give the Crushers many chances to score, and was dominant all night long. Lake Erie plated a run in the first inning, but was held without a run the rest of the night, and recorded just three hits in the contest.
Craig Hertler led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, and made his way to second on a passed ball. Kevin Berard bunted him over to third base, before Andrew Davis drove him home on a sacrifice fly, giving him eight RBIs against the Aviators this season.
The lead didn't last long, as the Aviators plated a pair of runs in the top of the third. Jeff Kremer walked to start the inning, and Elvin Rodriguez bunted him over to second. Brandon Newton singled to left to plate Kramer and tie the game, and Newton scored the eventual game winner a few moments later on Edgar Corcino's infield hit.
Lake Erie had few chances to score the rest of the night, and hit into a trio of double plays on the evening. They had two on, with one out in the fifth, when Juan Sanchez bounced into an inning ending 5-4-3 twin killing, and they had Seth Granger at second with one out in the eighth, but he never made it any further than that.
Matt Rein (4-4) took the loss, after allowing a pair of runs on five hits over six innings of action, while Howe scored the victory after holding the Crushers to just a run on two hits, and fanned seven over seven innings. Nick Cicio (9) tossed a perfect ninth inning to score the save. Jordan Wellander tossed three scoreless innings of relief for Lake Erie.
The Crushers are off on Monday but will begin a three game series with the Washington Wild Things at Consol Energy Park on Tuesday night. The Crushers will start righty Alex Kaminsky (3-4, 4.59) and the Wild Things will start righty Gary Lee (3-4, 3.81). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
