Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA- After tying up the ballgame three times on Sunday evening, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, quality comeback efforts fell short in a 5-4 nip-and-tuck battle at historic Bosse Field against the Evansville Otters.

In the bottom of the second frame, third baseman Stephen Marino's RBI double and designated hitter JR Higley's RBI single gave the Otters an early 2-0 lead.

Washington quickly cut the deficit to one in the third when shortstop AJ Nunziato sailed his third homerun of the season for the Things' first run of the night.

Two innings later, in the fifth, first baseman Stewart Ijames hit Washington's second solo homerun of the contest to knot the score at two.

However, the Otters quickly regained the lead when right fielder CJ Henry hit a two-out triple scoring John Schultz to put Evansville up 3-2.

Down by one score in the seventh, a costly error by Evansville infielder Frank Martinez allowed Alex Buccilli to reach first and drive home pinch runner Gus Benusa to tie the game at three.

A half-inning later however, Ricardo Lizcano, who was acquired via a recent trade with Lake Erie, crushed a solo shot to put Evansville in front 4-3.

The Wild Things rallied in the eighth and managed to tie the game at four, thanks to a productive at-bat that resulted in a sacrifice fly by second baseman CJ Beatty that scored Darian Sandford. Previously, Sandford was able to advance to second on a Evansville wild pitch and steal third for his league-leading 33rd swipe.

The Otters bounced back again, taking a 5-4 lead in the next half-inning with a game-winning solo shot by CJ Henry to seal the 5-4 win.

On a side note: Beatty ends the six-game road trip going 7-22 with three homeruns and five RBI.

Washington has a scheduled off-day on Monday and returns home to CONSOL ENERGY PARK to face the Lake Erie Crushers for a three-game series starting Tuesday July 9th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and it's a Two-Pack Tuesday at the ballpark. Fans can enjoy two hot-dogs, two sodas and two reserved seats for just $20.
