July 7, 2013 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release
(Marion, IL) - The Joliet Slammers (18-27) played their best game of the series but a two-run home run by Steven Liddle in the eighth inning proved to be the difference for Southern Illinois (26-19) as the Miners won by a final of 4-3.
Liddle's long ball not only secured the victory for Southern Illinois but it also cemented a three game sweep of Joliet, who has now lost three in a row.
Chuck Lofgren (4-3) allowed two runs and spread around five hits while lasting into the seventh inning and pitched better for the Slammers after struggling in his last outing against the Frontier Greys. Chase Doremus (1-3) picked up the loss for Joliet after relieving Lofgren in the seventh.
Joliet scored first in the second inning with Michael Wing leading off with a double. Seth Schwindenhammer then put the Slammers up 2-0 after hitting his fourth home run of the season.
The lead did not last for Joliet as the Miners took one run back in the bottom of the inning and then tied the game at 2-2 in the third when Cannon Lester scored on a RBI triple from Carlos Mendez.
The game remained deadlocked at two runs apiece until the bottom of the eighth inning.
Ken Gregory started the inning with a lead off walk. Two outs later Steven Liddle picked up his second home run of the season putting the Miners up 4-2.
Joliet made the game interesting in the ninth with Robby Kuzdale leading off with a base on balls and Jerod Yakubik moving him over to third on a single. Marquis Riley sent Kuzdale home on a sacrifice fly to center field making it a 4-3 game.
Michael Wing then sent a ball to left field but the ball was caught and the Miners won by a final of 4-3.
The Slammers have an off day on Monday then head back on the road for a three game series with the Normal CornBelters starting Tuesday night. Slammers baseball is back on the air at 6:45 with the pre game show on 1340 WJOL.
