CRESTWOOD, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored in five different innings and three pitchers combined to hold the Windy City ThunderBolts off the scoreboard as the Beach Bums took an 8-0 winover Windy City on Sunday night.
For the first time in the series, the Beach Bums claimed the first runs of the game. In the second Chase Burch walked and moved to second on a single by Zack Kometani. Matt Howard attacked the first pitch he saw and hit a ground-rule double to rightfield, scoring Burch and moving Kometani to third. Chris Cowell stood in next and hit a sac fly to right bring home Kometani for a 2-0 TC lead.
Traverse City extended the lead with a pair of two out runs in the third. Jose Vargas and Burch walked. Carlo Testa lined an 0-2 curveball into leftfield to score Vargas to make it 3-0. Kometani looped a single down the rightfield line to bring home Burch and push the lead to 4-0. In the fifth, Testa and Kometani worked a little bit more two out magic as Testa tripled into the rightfield corner and Kometani singled him home for a 5-0 TC advantage.
The Beach Bums capped the scoring for the contest in the eighth as Matt Howard led off with a wlk and stole second. Chris Cowell singled, moving Howard to third. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch by Kyle Zegarac, scoring Howard and pushing the lead to 6-0. Two batters later, Taylor Wrenn singled to right, plating Cowell. TC would get one more in the ninth to create the final margin.
Jake Sabol (6-4) picked up the win with six shutout innings. Matt Miller tossed a pair of scoreless, hitless innings in the seventh and eighth while Chris Squires blanked the Bolts in the ninth. Matt Wickswat (2-7) took the loss for Windy City.
