Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (18-26) @ SOUTHERN ILLINOIS MINERS (25-19)
Sunday, July 7 - 5:05 p.m. CT Rent One Park - Marion, IL
Game #45 - Road Game #21 (18-26), (6-14) LHP #27 Chuck Lofgren (4-3, 3.39 ERA) vs. RHP #30 Preston Vancil (5-1, 1.76 ERA)
Last time out...
The Joliet Slammers drew a season-high 11 walks but only managed one hit in a 9-3 loss to the Southern Illinois Miners Saturday night at Rent One Park in Marion, IL. Meanwhile Southern Illinois pounded out 14 hits and jumped on Slammers starter Brett Zawacki early. They scored a run in the second and four more in the third. Zawacki only lasted three innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. Corey Kimes had mixed results in long relief, going four innings and giving up three runs. Joliet loaded the bases in the third and fifth innings via walks but did not score. They finally tallied a hit in the seventh on a RBI single from Marquis Riley. The Slammers left 10 men on base as they could not take advantage of the wildness of the Southern Illinois pitchers. For the Slammers it was their fourth straight loss on the road and their sixth road series loss of the season.
For Starters...
Chuck Lofgren is coming off a rough outing against the Frontier Greys on July 2 as he gave up six runs, five earned, in six innings in a 7-1 loss for the Slammers. Prior to that he had tossed two straight scoreless outings of seven and six innings, respectively. Lofgren, 27, was a fourth round selection of the Cleveland Indians in the 2004 MLB draft out of Serra High School in San Mateo, California. Lofgren's decorated professional career includes being named the starting pitcher for the 2006 Carolina League All-Star Game. Lofgren followed that up by being named to the United States team for the 2007 All-Star Futures Game. The United States roster that year also included the likes of Clayton Kershaw, Matt Garza and Justin Upton. He pitched for the Cleveland organization from 2004-2009, the Milwaukee organization from 2009-2010 and the San Francisco organization from 2010-2011. Last season, Lofgren pitched for the Amarillo Sox of the American Association. Most recently, he was with the Brisbane Bandits of the Australian Baseball League. Lofgren has appeared in a total of 47 games at the Triple-A level during his professional career.
Trying to avoid the sweep...
The Slammers are trying to avoid being swept for the third time this season and second time on the road.
Offensive struggles...
The Slammers have scored three or fewer runs in six of their past seven games. They are 3-4 during that time span. The Slammers have a total of three hits in this series against Southern Illinois.
Riley leading the way...
Marquis Riley leads the Slammers with a batting average of .289. He also has the most multi-hit games with 12. He has hit safely in seven of the past eight games and had the team's only hit last night.
Road woes...
The Slammers have won only one road series this year and they are 6-14 away from home. A loss tonight would be a season-high five-game losing streak on the road.
Save me...
Justin Erasmus is 9-9 in save opportunities this season and the Slammers have not blown a save as a team. They are undefeated when leading after seven.
Holding on...
The Slammers have posted an impressive 16-2 record when leading after six innings this season. However they are 2-24 when tied or trailing after six.
High five!
The Slammers are 13-2 when they score five or more runs. They are 5-24 when scoring less than five.
They gone!!
Slammers' pitching has struck out 329 batters so far this season; third most in the Frontier League. They have matched their franchise record for K's in one game (14) five times this season.
