Evansville Otters News Release

Marion, IL - The Otters weathered some early trouble to take a 5-1 lead and hold on to win 6-4 Saturday night over the Southern Illinois Miners.

The Miners loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first inning, but after a Jeremy Milons sacrifice fly plated one run, Joey Metropoulos grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The Otters surged ahead in the next half inning, taking the lead on a Frank Meade two-run home run to left field. One batter later, back-to-back doubles by Kevin Mackey and Matt Pulley scored another run. After an Andre Liscinsky single advanced Pulley to third, Pulley came around to score on a Jeremy Strack groundout. The Otters picked up another tally in the fourth inning when Mackey led off the inning with his second double and scored on Strack's RBI single.

After the Miners crawled to within 5-4, an Andre Liscinsky two out RBI single in the eighth gave Evansville a little breathing room. The Miners would soon suffocate the Otters though, as Travon Jackson stepped to the plate with one on and two out in the ninth inning. Jackson lined a Justin Smith 0-2 pitch down the right field line for a double, advancing Andrew Sweet to third. With the tying run in scoring position, Pedro Lopez softly lined out to the first baseman Mackey to end the game.

Dustin Renfrow (3-1) picked up the win, giving up four earned runs in 6.1 innings. Ryan Mitchell (1-1) absorbed the loss, surrendering five earned runs in only 3.2 innings. Justin Smith closed the door in the ninth for his sixth save.

The Otters will have a chance to win their first series since June 7th when the three game set concludes Sunday at 7:05pm CDT.
