Grizzlies Send Three to All-Star Game

July 5, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release

The Frontier League announced the 2009 All-Star teams Sunday afternoon and three Gateway Grizzlies have been chosen.

First baseman Charlie Lisk and Outfielders Stephen Holdren and Joseph Scaperotta will represent the West Division in the mid-summer classic held at Rockford's Road Ranger Stadium. Lisk and Holdren were selected in 2007 and 2008 as well.

"I am very proud of Joe, Steve, and Charlie," said Grizzlies Manager Phil Warren. "I respect their work ethic and the way they approach the game."

"I commend Steve and Charlie for their consistency each season. As the backbone of our offense and leaders in the clubhouse, I could not ask for anything more from them. I am particularly excited for Joe, because this will be his first Professional All-Star Game. It is gratifying as a Manager when you see one of your young players develop, produce, and embrace their opportunity the way Joe has." "

"I know they will represent the Gateway Grizzlies and the Frontier League well at the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game in Rockford. I wish them all the best and am very proud of each of them."

Heading into Sunday's contest with Windy City, Lisk's name is up and down the Frontier League leader board. He currently leads the league in RBI's with 43 and a slugging percentage of .691. Lisk is tied for second with 13 home runs and is fourth with a .345 batting average.

Along with Lisk, Holdren's name is also among the league leaders heading into the All-Star break. He currently leads the league in runs scored with 44, and is tied for second in extra base hits (25) and third in home runs (12). Holdren has a .314 batting average and 29 RBI's.

Scaperotta, who is carrying a 23 game hitting streak into Sunday, has had a strong start to the 2009 season. His .675 slugging percentage in second in the league and his .349 batting average is good for fourth. He is tied for fourth in home runs (12) and has driven in 31 runs.

"Not only are these three fantastic ball players on the field, they are men of character off the field," said Grizzlies General Manager Steve Gomric. "I would let my children learn to play baseball from these guys. I am proud to have them represent the Gateway Grizzlies and our community at the All-Star game."

The Grizzlies return home July 17th for a three game series with the Lake Erie Crushers. Tickets and group packages are still available by calling the Grizzlies ticket office at (618) 337-3000, online at gatewaygrizzlies.com or by stopping at the GCS Ballpark box office.
