July 5, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release

Behind a brilliant Mike Penn pitching performance, the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti completed the sweep, beating the Traverse City Beach Bums 7-3.

The Sliders scored first in the top of the second when Bryan Bonner tripled, and then scored on a throwing error. Traverse City quickly answered scoring in the bottom of the second when the leadoff batter had a triple of his own, and scored tying the game 1-1.

Mike Penn settled into his own retiring the next nine Bums in a row, which also allowed the offense to build a lead. After the leadoff triple in the second inning, Penn didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning, by that time Midwest already put up seven runs.

Roberto Mena, and Robbie Knapp both hit sacrifice flies in the third to put Midwest up 3-1. Clay McCord added another run when he singled, stole second and third, and scored on a Ben Barrone single in the fourth.

In Barrone's next at bat pulled a solo homer which put the Sliders up 5-1. McCord and Knapp both scored on an error in the seventh to add to more insurance runs.

Penn threw eight innings allowing three runs and struck out seven while receiving his fourth win. Earl Oakes came on in the ninth retiring the Bums in order.

Monday the Sliders have an off day before hosting the Rockford Riverhawks Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. in Oestrike Stadium.
