Five Freedom Selected as All-Stars
July 5, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - Five Florence Freedom have been selected as starters on the 2009 Frontier League East All-Star team.
Infielders Billy Mottram and Brad Hough, catcher Justin Pickett, outfielder Ryan Basham and relief pitcher Demetrius Banks were chosen by Frontier League managers, coaches, general managers and media members to represent Florence in Rockford, Illinois for the all-star game.
Mottram has led the entire league in home runs for the majority of the first half of the season. His 16 homers rank first and 40 RBIs rank third currently in the Frontier League. It's the infielder's second straight trip to the league's all-star game as he will start at second base.
Hough just missed all-star appearances in 2007 and 2008. The first time Frontier League All-Star has hit .303 with six homers, 25 RBIs and is second on the Freedom with nine stolen bases. Hough tied with Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti shortstop Roberto Mena for the starting nod.
Pickett's 12 home runs leads all Frontier League catchers. The first time all-star has hit .293 with 31 RBIs and has an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .960.
Basham makes the all-star team for the first time in his three year Freedom career as a starting outfielder. He was the 2007 Frontier League rookie of the year out of Michigan State and has hit .316 so far in 2009.
Banks is the only Freedom pitcher to make it on the Frontier League East starting roster. The left-hander makes his first appearance and has appeared 20 times this season for the Freedom with a 3.16 ERA.
The all-star game will be held at Road Ranger Stadium, home of the Rockford RiverHawks, on Wednesday, July 15. Three more players will be added to the rosters by the manager of the team with the best record in each division after July 8.
