South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Beaumont, TX - Trent Campbell scored against back up goalie Jeff Pietrasiak in overtime to give the South Carolina Stingrays a hard fought 4-3 victory over the top team in the ECHL, the Texas Wildcatters, at the Ford Arena in Beaumont, TX.
"I really don't even know what to say," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "I'm just so proud of the way these guys came out and battled here tonight."
In the first period Travis Morin got the South Carolina Stingrays off on the right foot by scoring his thirteenth goal of the season from Nate Kiser and Scott Romfo at 9:39, the only scoring for either team in the first period.
The second period featured a great deal more offense. It started with the Rays extending their lead to 2-0 when Chris Chaput got his 11th goal of the season from Mike Gabinet and Trent Campbell at 2:10 on the power play. Texas would cut the lead in half when Dan Welch got a short handed goal at 4:08. Cail MacLean got his 11th goal of the season on the power play as wello, from Gabinet and Morin at 6:02 to extend the lead to 3-1. But Texas got two unanswered goals in the period, and after 40 minutes it was tied up at three.
The third period featured up tempo play, but few chances for either team and the game went to overtime for the second time in as many games for South Carolina. At 3:31 of overtime Campbell got his seventh goal of the year to give the Rays the victory, their first of the season against Texas.
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 37 of the 40 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Pietrasiak who stopped nine of the ten shots he faced in the final 37:29 of the game. He replaced starter Anton Khudobin who allowed three goals on fifteen shots in 26:02. The Rays went 2-5 on the power play while killing off six of seven short handed situations.
"This game says a lot about their heart," said Bednar. "This team has a ton of heart."
The Stingrays take on the Wildcatters for the second game of their three game series tomorrow night. Drop of the puck will be at 8:05 Eastern time.
