Elmira, NY - The Johnstown Chiefs used two goals 32 seconds apart in the first period to set the pace for a 4-3 win Friday night against the Elmira Jackals.

Ryan Garlock got the Chiefs on the board with his twelfth goal of the year just 2:54 into the game. Mike Knight, in his first game back after missing seven with a groin injury, assisted as did Randy Rowe. Patrick Levesque cashed in next with his first of the season, beating

Garlock put his second goal in on a shorthanded breakaway, beating Joel Martin five-hole with a clever backhand shot. Elmira would answer with a shortie of their own when Jim McKenzie blocked a Brian Deeth point shot and put his own backhander past Ryan Nie on the blocker side.

The real story in the second period was penalties, though, as the Chiefs and Jackals combined for 58 minutes in the box in the second. Two near line-brawls broke out as a result of aggressive play in front of each team's net. Bobby Robbins gave Nie a two-handed shove after colliding with the Chiefs' netminder, and all ten of the skaters converged on the crease. Brandon Straub and Trevor Hendrikx broke away from the pile for a full-on fight.

Garlock got into his own tussle, then, after his drive to the net set off another scrum. It was between Garlock and McKenzie, trading punches as well as shorthanded goals.

The third period featured more goals than penalties, and the Jackals got things started when Pierre-Luc Faubert shuffled a rebound by Nie. It had looked like Nie froze the puck, but it was ruled a goal.

Andrew Martens would answer for the Chiefs, though, less than a minute later when he potted a rebound off of a shot by Joey Olson that hit the post. Dan Kronick wristed a shot through Nie's five hole to answer Martens' goal, but the fourth goal was never scored.

Nie, and the Chiefs, moved to 2-0 at First Arena and he had to play well again to save 30 of Elmira's 33 shots. While the power play went 0-for-8, the Chiefs moved to 3-0 this year when scoring shorthanded.
