Florida Everblades News Release
AUGUSTA, GA - A night after suffering their worst loss of the season, the Florida Everblades (20-12-3) matched their largest margin of victory after jumping on the Augusta Lynx (20-14-3) en-route to a 6-1 victory on Friday night at James Brown Arena in front of a crowd of 4,174. Everblades forward Derek Damon notched his second hat-trick of the season in the win, and goaltender David Shantz closed the door by stopping 36 of 37 shots.
The Everblades got off to a quick start in the opening period to carry a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Damon's run to his second hat-trick of the season began just 1:23 into the game when he took a pass from Dan Collins at the high slot and fired a one-timer past Augusta net-minder Bobby Goepfert. Preston Callander also assisted on the game's opening tally.
Damon registered his second goal of the night on Florida's first power play opportunity by jamming home a loose puck from the bottom of the right circle at 5:51 of the period. Callander and Collins tallied their second assists of the night on Damon's 13th goal of the year. Damon completed his hat-trick at 14:12 of the period with the Everblades on their third power play of the frame. Damon's third of the night and 14th of the season came after Goepfert stopped a shot by Callander, but Damon took the rebound and chipped it into the upper right corner of the net for the 3-0 lead. Collins also assisted on the tally.
The Everblades added to their lead with two more goals in the second period opening a 5-0 lead heading into the second intermission. Kirk MacDonald scored the first of the two tallies with a crafty wrist shot from the right circle that snuck past the arm of Goepfert and under the crossbar at 3:20 to open a 4-0 lead. Jarret Lukin assisted on the marker which was MacDonald's sixth of the season. The goal also chased Goepfert from the net, as he was replaced by J.P. Levasseur.
Midway through the frame the Everblades notched their fifth goal of the night which came just after Florida killed off an Augusta power play. David Cornacchia blocked a point shot and fed it out to the neutral zone for Brad Brown who was exiting the penalty box and promptly broke in cleanly on Levasseur, then fired a wrist shot that ripped inside the right post.
As the third period commenced the Everblades quickly added to their lead when Brad Herauf notched the team's third power play goal of the night just 1:47 into the frame. After Cornacchia kept the puck in the zone at the right point, he wound it behind the net to Lukin who found Herauf out front with a pass. Herauf then quickly one-timed the centering pass into the net for his eighth goal of the season.
The Everblades held their 6-0 lead until the closing seconds when the Lynx spoiled Shantz's shutout bid by notching a power play gal with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. A nice passing play saw Geoff Peters deflected a pass from Ryan Dingle into the net from the right post.
Shantz improved to 2-0-0 on the season in the winning effort, while Goepfert suffered the loss and saw his record fall to 8-3-0 after allowing four goals on 13 shots in 23:20 played. Levasseur mopped up and finished the game by stopping 13 of 15 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 3-for-6, while the Lynx finished 1-for-7.
