Columbia Inferno News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Jan. 11, 2008)-The Columbia Inferno (14-15-4-4, 36 points) used multi-point nights from four players and a stellar 37-save effort from Jeff Jakaitis to torch the host Charlotte Checkers (14-15-0-4, 32 points) 5-0 on Friday night.

Winger Jeff Miles put the Inferno on the board when he scored on the power play at 12:26 of the first period. Centers Brad Ralph and Peter Tsimikalis assisted on Miles' team-leading 15th goal. Winger Liam Huculak gave the Inferno a 2-0 lead at 14:15 of the first period when his shot beat Checkers goalie Chris Holt, with assists to Jeremy Hall and Anthony Battaglia.

The Inferno didn't let up in the second period, as Battaglia notched his fifth of the year halfway through the period, with an assist to rookie defenseman Julien Brouillette. Just five minutes later, Ralph scored a power play goal of his own, beating Holt with help from Tsimikalis and blueliner Reid Cashman.

The Checkers replaced Holt with Mike Ayers for the third period, but Miles scored another power play goal at 16:30 to give the Inferno a 5-0 lead. Tsimikalis and Ralph assisted.

Holt stopped 19 of 23 through the first two periods, while Ayers stopped 10 of 11 in the third. Jakaitis, the rookie from Lake Superior State University, recorded his second shutout of the year.
