Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - The Checkers introduced a brand-new primary logo in front of over 8,000 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice but were unable to bring the crowd to their feet very often as the Columbia Inferno shutout Charlotte, 5-0.
In the first period, while the Inferno worked the power-play, forward Jeff Miles beat Checkers netminder, Chris Holt at 12:26 giving Columbia a 1-0 lead. Later, it was Liam Huccaluk taking a nice drop pass from Anthony Battaglia and firing the puck that just squeezed through Holt at 14:15 putting Columbia ahead, 2-0.
In the middle frame, the Inferno would lead 3-0 after Battaglia struck at 10:37 with a wrister that found its way behind Holt. They Inferno would end the period with a power play goal on a blistering one-timer by team captain, Brad Ralph at 15:54.
Checkers goaltender, Mike Ayers would start the third period in relief of Holt but it wouldn't be enough to lift the Checkers. They were unable to tally a goal on Inferno goalie, Jeff Jakaitis. Miles would add one more goal at 16:30 on the power play in a nice passing play and the game would end with the Checkers losing 5-0.
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Jan. 17 against the Gwinnett Gladiators. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $175.
