Omaha Bounces Back with Team Effort in Rochester

July 16, 2022 - International League (IL)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (44-44) defeated the Rochester Red Wings (47-42) 4-1. Omaha looks to earn the series split tomorrow as the Red Wings lead the series 3-2.

First baseman Angelo Castellano drew a two-out walk in the second before third baseman Jimmy Govern hit a double to put runners at second and third. After a 3-for-4 game last night, second baseman Gabriel Cancel came through and hit a single to score the pair and tally Omaha's first runs.

Left-hander Josh Dye got the spot start for the Chasers, going just 2.0 innings, but allowed no runs on two hits with two strikeouts in the no decision.

After going down in order in the third, fourth, and fifth, center fielder Drew Waters started the sixth with a single before moving to second on a wild pitch. A groundout would put Waters at third, but he would end up stranded and leave the score at 2-0 in favor of Omaha.

Rochester cut Omaha's lead in half in the sixth with a homer to left field as Omaha's bullpen allowed a run for the first time since the series opener on Tuesday.

Right-hander Ándres Núñez (Win, 4-1) came in to pitch the seventh and eighth, not allowing a run for the 20th consecutive game. That streak leads the International League this season while his 24.1-inning scoreless streak is the longest on the team this season.

The eighth inning was a wild inning for Omaha, striking out four times in the inning but scoring two runs on one hit with two Rochester errors. Cancel walked to start the inning before stealing second and moving to third when the catcher couldn't handle a ball at the backstop. Designated hitter Saul Garza struck out but reached on a wild pitch with Cancel scoring on the play. Waters singled before shortstop Iván Castillo was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Another fielding error by the Red Wings would score Garza and put the Storm Chasers ahead 4-1 after eight.

Right-hander Brad Peacock came in to finish the game for Omaha, allowing a leadoff single before earning his seventh save with a flyout and a pair of strikeouts.

The Storm Chasers and Red Wings finish their series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. CDT. Coverage will begin at 11:45 a.m. on 1180 The Zone.

Omaha returns home for a four-game series after the MLB All-Star break for a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs from July 22-55. The series will include Marvel's Defenders of the Diamond on July 22.
