July 16, 2022 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release
IOWA CUBS (39-48) vs. BUFFALO BISONS (45-43)
Saturday - 6:08 PM - Principal Park - Des Moines, IA
RHP Javier Assad (0-1, 3.68) vs. RHP Andrew Moore (0-1, 9.82)
TONIGHT'S GAME: Iowa and Buffalo will play game five of their series tonight with Javier Assad set to make his Principal Park debut. The righty is 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA through two starts with Iowa, allowing three earned runs on nine hits over 7.1 innings pitched. In his 7.1 innings, Assad has allowed just one home run and hit one batter while walking two batters and striking out five. Opponents have hit .290 against him through his first two Triple-A starts. On the other side, Andrew Moore will take the ball for the Bisons, set to make his second start of the series against Iowa. In his first start in the opener on Tuesday, the right hander allowed one run on two hits over 3.0 innings. It was his longest outing of the year, and the only run he allowed came on a solo home run by Jared Young. Through three games with Buffalo, Moore is 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits. Half of those hits have left the yard, allowing six home runs over his 7.1 innings. He has walked one and struck out four while allowing opponents to hit .375 against him.
JUST ENOUGH: The I-Cubs scored three runs in their victory over the Bisons last night, marking just the fourth time all season they have won a game in which they've scored less than four. Iowa has gone 0-22 when scoring two runs or less and 4-8 when scoring three runs. That compares to a 35-18 record when they've scored four or more runs. On the other side, the I-Cubs' opponents have fared much better in low-scoring games. Opposing teams are 6-20 against Iowa when they've scored two runs or less and 6-9 when they've scored three.
WHAT A RELIEF: Last night, Sean Newcomb and Erich Uelmen combined to pitch four scoreless innings of relief, allowing only two hits and two walks between them. Their combined effort was the fifth scoreless game for Iowa's bullpen in their last ten outings. With the exception of Wednesday's game, during which Cayne Ueckert allowed three runs, the relievers have limited opponents to one earned run or less every night for nearly two weeks straight. They've gone 2-2 with two saves over their last ten games, earning a 1.29 ERA (7ER/48.2IP) as a group. That compares to the 1-6 record, one save, and 8.66 ERA (51ER/53.0IP) they'd collected during the previous ten games. In the last ten games, opponents have notched 40 hits and walked 14 times against Iowa's relievers. Those numbers are down from the 62 hits and 37 walks the bullpen allowed over the previous ten.
JACKSON IN ACTION: Jackson Frazier went 1-for-4 with a run scored last night, extending his hitting streak to a season-high seven games. It's his longest streak since 2017, when he hit in seven straight with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and ties that streak for his career high at Triple-A. Frazier has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, boosting his season average with Iowa to .246, and reached base in all 13. After starting his I-Cubs career with a .195 average (8-for-41) over his first ten games, the outfielder has turned it on. Since the calendar flipped to July, he has gone 16-for-46 through 13 games. That has given him a .348 average and a team-leading .696 slugging percentage this month. He has also collected 16 RBI over that span, which is the most by an I-Cub this month, and accounts for over a quarter of Iowa's total run production (16-of-61) in July.
DEICHMANN GOES DEEP: Greg Deichmann broke out of an 0-14 slump last night in a big way, crushing his seventh home run of the season to provide all three of Iowa's runs. It was his first hit since July 7 in Indianapolis and his first home run since June 14 against Omaha. In the month between home runs, Deichmann played in 21 games and went 16-for-71 with just two extra-base hits - both doubles - and three RBI. Despite the long layoff, he still ranks fourth on the active roster in home runs and RBI (29). With his three RBI last night, he also tied for the team lead in multi-RBI games, matching Jared Young at eight apiece.
DOMINANT DERMODY: As one of four pitchers who have been with Iowa all season, last night's starter Matt Dermody has been one of the most consistent pieces of the I-Cubs' pitching staff this year. He leads the team in wins (5) and innings (70.1) while ranking second in starts (12) and strikeouts (60). The lefty has filled various roles for the I-Cubs, bouncing between the rotation and long-relief, which is a change for him after he spent the last seven seasons working almost exclusively as a reliever. In fact, last night's start tied Dermody's career high for starts in a season, first set in 2014 in Single-A. Despite the change, he has found success this year, especially lately. With last night's one-run outing in the books, Dermody is now 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA (5ER/28.1IP) and 26 strikeouts over his last six outings. That has been enough to put him ninth in the International League in ERA (4.22) and tie him for fourth in winning percentage (.625).
BACK WITH TWO: Darius Hill has been working through the first slump of his Triple-A career over the last week, going just 2-for-21 in his last six games. Over that six-game stretch, the outfielder recorded one hit on July 7 and one hit on July 10, marking the longest stretch of the season (six games) for him without a multi-hit effort. He ended that skid with a two-hit performance last night, going 2-for-4 including a double. The outfielder was hitless in four of his six games from July 7-14, the stretch in which he hit just .095 (2-for-21) with one double, two runs batted in and three strikeouts. His two hits last night give him 15 multi-hit efforts through his first 34 games with Iowa, including now 10 two-hit games.
AGAINST BUFFALO: Iowa and Buffalo will play game five of their six-game set tonight with the series currently tied at two games apiece. With their two-run victory last night, Iowa tied the series at two and also the season scoring, with each team scoring 36 runs through the first 10 games the two teams have played this year. Iowa is now 2-2 against the Bisons this year at Principal Park and 4-6 overall against Buffalo after going 2-4 in their first series of the year at Sahlen Field. The I-Cubs hold a six-game lead over Buffalo in their all-time series at 112-106 and are now 17 games over the .500 mark at home against the Bisons all-time, going 62-45.
SHORT HOPS: The I-Cubs drew their largest home crowd of the season last night, with 10,558 fans in attendance...LJ Talley pinch hit and singled in the ninth inning last night, extending his hitting streak against the I-Cubs to seven games, which is the longest by an opponent this year.
