St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints have watched nine times as other teams celebrated walk-off wins. On Saturday night against the Toledo Mud Hens they were the team celebrating at the end. Tim Beckham's walk-off single in the 10th gave the Saints a 4-3 victory at CHS Field in front of 8,323.

With the game tied at three in the top of the 10th and pinch runner John Valente the placed runner at second, Jacob Robson hit a fly ball to the warning track in left. Michael Helman made the catch and came up throwing to third nailing Valente for the double play. Wladimir Pinto struck out Derek Hill to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, David Bañuelos was the placed runner at second for the Saints. Elliot Soto's ground out to short moved Bañuelos to third. That brought up Beckham who lined a single into center scoring Bañuelos for the game winner. Beckham went 3-5 with an RBI and is hitting .400 over his first 27 games with the Saints.

The game looked like it would end in the favor of the Saints in nine innings, but the Mud Hens rallied in the top of the ninth. With the Saints up 2-1 the Mud Hens grabbed the lead in the ninth as Josh Lester led off the inning with a single to right. Brendon Davis followed with a double to left putting runners at second and third. Kerry Carpenter hit a grounder to the left of second baseman Elliot Soto. He fielded it and came home with the throw, but it was just late as Lester scored to tie the game. A wild pitch scored Davis from second giving the Mud Hens their first lead of the night at 3-2.

The Saints, however, were able to tie it up in the bottom of the ninth. Jermaine Palacios led off with a single to left-center. With one out, Curtis Terry doubled off the glove of the shortstop Zach Short putting runners at second and third. Helman pinch hit for John Andreoli and hit a sacrifice fly to right tying the game at three.

The Saints got on the board first in the bottom of the first courtesy of Miguel Sanó who hit a solo homer to left, his first of the night and first with the Saints during his Major League rehab, making it 1-0.

Saints starter Mario Sanchez was cruising much like Aaron Sanchez had the night before. Mario retired the first six hitters he faced and took a no-hitter into the fifth. After recording the first out on a strikeout, he allowed the first hit of the game to Jamie Westbrook, a line drive single off the glove of the leaping Palacios at shortstop. Westbrook was balked to second and, with two outs, scored on an RBI single from Ali Sánchez knotting the game at one. Mario went 5.0 innings allowing one run on two hits while walking two and striking out three.

Sanó gave the Saints the lead in the sixth with his second homer of the night, a solo shot to left-center, making it 2-1. Sanó finished the night 2-4 with two home runs, two RBI, and two runs scored.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the six-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:07 p.m. at CHS Field. The Saints send RHP Josh Winder (0-0, 4.50) to the mound and the Mud Hens are TBA. The game can be seen on 45TV and MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
