ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A late-inning rally by the Indians fell short as the Clippers captured their third consecutive game of the series, 9-7. The Indians jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the first. With two runners in scoring position, Rodolfo Castro grounded a ball down the third base line that would score Tucupita Marcano and a throwing error by third basemen Jose Fermin brought home Ji-Hwan Bae. The Clippers responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to take a 3-2 advantage. In the fourth inning, a two-run homer by Trenton Brooks extended the Columbus lead to 5-2, and Greg Allen would match with a two-run blast of his own to bring the Indians back within one run in the fifth. A four-run seventh gave the Clippers their largest lead of the game to make it 9-4. Indy sparked a rally with three runs in the third - highlighted by a two RBI double by Carter Bins. Indy was down 9-7 going into the ninth and threatened with runners on second and third with no outs, but Jake Jewell struck out three consecutive batters to end the rally.
HE'S BACK: Major league rehabber Greg Allen went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in Friday night's loss. In three games with Indy, he is hitting .455 (5-for-11) with a home run, a double, three RBI and four runs scored. After suffering a hamstring injury during spring training, he has been sidelined for the first half of the season and has yet to make his Pirates debut. He began his rehab assignment with Single-A Bradenton on 7/6, and he hit .333 (3-for-9) in three games. Pittsburgh claimed the outfielder off waivers from New York (AL) on Nov. 5, 2021.
ONE SHY: Mason Martin is currently one home run shy of 100 career home runs. The slugger has launched 14 home runs this season and two this month. He has double-digit home runs in each of his five professional seasons and his career-high most home runs in a season came in 2019 when he hit 35 with Single-A Greensboro (23) and High-A Bradenton (12).
A WALK IN THE PARK: Hoy Park had one of Indy's four hits on Thursday afternoon and continued his liking for Clippers pitching. Park is hitting .382 (13-for-34) with a home run, two doubles and six RBI in 10 games against Columbus this season. In 42 plate appearances, he is reaching base safely nearly half the time with a .488 on-base percentage and seven walks. Park's splits against Columbus compared to the rest of the league are listed below:
Versus Columbus (10 games): .382 AVG, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R, 3 2B, 7 BB, 8 K, .488 OBP
Versus Rest of League (32 games): .178 AVG, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 13 R, 2 2B, 23 BB, 33 K, .331 OBP
MR. RELIABLE: Bligh Madris has a hit in each of the four games against Columbus this week. He has hit safely in 37 of his 53 games played this season, good for a .301 batting average (55-for-183). He has picked up right where he left off with Indy after spending a month in Pittsburgh and making his MLB debut. Madris has hits in five of seven games with Indy this month - including two multi-hit games. Prior to having his contract selected on 6/20, he had eight multi-hit performances in 16 June games.
BAE FINDS A WAY: Ji-Hwan Bae walked twice in yesterday's contest to reach base successfully for the ninth time in his last 10 games. Bae has now reached base safely in 64 of his 75 games this season. His homer on Tuesday night put him up to eight home runs on the season, which ties his career-high for most home runs after he hit eight last season between Double-A Altoona (7) and FCL Pirates (1). Bae is the first Indians player to hit eight home runs and collect 20 stolen bases since Alen Hanson in 2016 (8 HR, 36 SB) and the seventh Indians player since 2005 to achieve this feat.
TONIGHT: The Indians will look to end a three-game skid against the Clippers at 7:05 PM ET. After yesterday's loss, the season series is split 8-8, even though they have been outscored 110-81 over the 16 games. Eight of the 16 games in their season series have been decided by two runs or less. Tonight, Zach Matson will take the mound for his thirteen appearance and fifth start with the Indians this season. Columbus will counter with left-hander Andrew Misiaszek, who will make his eighth appearance and second start of the season. Misiaszek is 1-0 with a 5.63 ERA (5er/8.0ip) and has not thrown more than 1.2 innings in each of his eight appearances.
MATSON TOES THE RUBBER: Zach Matson will look to extend his 6.2-inning scoreless streak over his last five appearances tonight as he makes a spot start for Indy. The left-hander's first career start came this season with Altoona, and since he's become Indy's go-to guy to begin a bullpen day when necessary. In his five starts with Indianapolis, he is 0-1 with a 6.67 ERA (6er/8.1ip) compared to a 3.91 ERA (4er/9.2ip) in eight relief appearances.
THIS DATE IN 1947: Future Dodger Hall of Famer Duke Snider went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run that sparked St. Paul to a 7-3 win over the Indians. Gene Mauch went 3-for-3 for the Indians offense.
