Louisville Bats News Release

MOOSIC, PA- Each team assumed their Copa de la Diversión identities as the Murciélagos de Louisville (36-52) defeated the Vejigantes de Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (43-46) by a final score of 8-3.

The Louisville offense stayed hot, tallying 16 hits in the ball game, with every starter collecting at least one hit. The hit total is the second-most hits in a game by Louisville this season, behind an 18-hit effort from the club on June 8 against Charlotte.

Following a first-inning base hit from his fellow Reds' rehabber Jake Fraley, Aristides Aquino laced a line-drive over the head of Scranton left fielder Miguel Andujar that one-hopped the wall, and despite making a good effort to field and return the ball to the infield, Fraley hustled around the base paths to score from first.

After falling behind 0-2 in the next at-bat, Louisville infielder singled to left to drive in Aquino from second and give the Bats an early 2-0 lead.

In the following half inning, two Scranton solo homers from Oswald Peraza and Josh Breaux quickly evened the score at 2-2.

In the third, the Murciélagos again claimed the two-run lead when Alejo Lopez drew a bases-loaded walk and Chris Okey followed with an RBI-single. Aristides Aquino drove home his second RBI of the game with a fielder's choice in the fourth inning to give the Bats a 5-2 advantage.

The Louisville offense continued to pour it on in the fifth inning, when a sneaky Ronnie Dawson bunt single loaded the bases with no one out. TJ Friedl, who has been hot since arriving in Scranton, came through with a two-RBI base knock that zipped just under the glove of Scranton first baseman and former Bat Jake Bauers.

Louisville plated one more in the inning, thanks to a Jake Fraley infield single and some adept baserunning from Ronnie Dawson to score from second, giving the Murciélagos an 8-2 lead.

After allowing a pair of runs in the first inning, Louisville starter Justin Nicolino (LINE) settled in nicely, retiring 10 straight Vejigantes. Nicolino would finish the day with his second quality start in July, tossing 7.0 innings, surrendering three runs on five hits, with six strikeouts and no walks.

Another Scranton solo home run from Phillip Evans in the seventh inning accounted for the final score of 8-3.

Louisville and Scranton Wilkes-Barre will wrap up their six-game series tomorrow afternoon (July 17) at PNC Field, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Right-handed Cincinnati rehabber Justin Dunn (0-1, 5.59) will make an attempt to put the Bats in position for a series split, while fellow righty Clark Schmidt (0-0, 2.63) look to solidify the series win for the RailRiders.
