Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings were blanked 4-0 on Friday night at Rogers Place by the visiting Kelowna Rockets.
A fairly even first period ended with the Rockets holding a 1-0 lead after they were able to take advantage of an Edmonton mistake midway through the opening 20.
Dylan Wightman ended up being the benefactor of an Edmonton turnover behind their net after he was fed the loose puck in the slot and zipped it into a wide-open cage for the game's ice breaker.
In the second period, the Rockets were able to extend their lead less than four minutes in as former Oil King Carson Golder found the back of the net with a one-timer from the slot on a Kelowna power play.
At the 12:57 mark of the middle stanza, the Rockets once again increased their lead as Wightman snagged his second tally of the game with a perfectly placed shot into the top corner from the right-circle of the Edmonton zone.
The Oil Kings began to generate some scoring chances late in the period but were unable to solve Talyn Boyko as they arrived at the second intermission down 3-0.
In the third period, the Rockets added another power play goal that was credited to Elias Carmichael after he got a friendly pinballing bounce on a point shot off the end boards to officially put the game out of reach.
Logan Cunningham finished the game making 36 saves for the Oil Kings, while Boyko turned in 27 saves for his third shutout of the season. Edmonton went 0-for-5 on the power play, Kelowna was 2-for-5.
Next up, the Oil Kings continue their five-game homestand on Sunday afternoon when they host the top team in the WHL the Winnipeg ICE at 4:00 p.m.
