Home Soil

After three games in four nights against B.C. opponents, the Hawks are back in the U.S. Division for two rivalry clashes this weekend, starting with a rematch against Spokane. After suffering their first loss to Spokane of the season last week and struggling to light the lamp in Prince George this week, Portland will look to re-ignite its offense against a team that it has averaged five goals per game against during the 2022-23 campaign. The Winterhawks' leading scorers have been getting their looks and it's a safe bet the goals will come in bunches soon enough.

Dante's Inferno

The week may not have started how the Winterhawks overall, but the play of 20-year-old netminder Dante Giannuzzi had to be encouraging. The Winnipeg, Man. native did all he could in a back-to-back set in Prince George, stopping 59 of 62 total shots and accruing his second shutout of the season with 30 saves in an eventual shootout loss. We'll see who gets the nod tonight, but Head Coach Mike Johnston has leaned on Giannuzzi lately, giving the veteran netminder 10 of the last 12 starts.

Cat's Cradle

Spokane has tumbled down the standings this season but the club's young talent has shone this year, particularly top 2024 NHL Draft prospect Berkly Catton. The Saskatoon, Sask. native has posted 41 points in 49 games this season - good for second on the team and fifth among all WHL rookies - including seven points in four games against the Winterhawks this year. He was instrumental in the Chiefs' lone 2-2022-23 win over the Hawks last week, notching a goal and two helpers to kickstart his team's offense. Keeping Spokane's young star quiet in tonight's rematch will go a long way toward helping the Hawks get back in the win column.
