Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
BRANDON M.B. - Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats edge the Brandon Wheat Kings 4-3 in front of a sold out crowd in Brandon Friday night.
The first period was all Wheat Kings but the Pats found a way to score the opening with with just over two minutes remaining. Alex Suzdalev would take a cross ice pass and play the puck behind goaltender Carson Bjarnason. The puck would then hit Wheat Kings forward Zakhar Polshakov and go in to give the Pats an early 1-0 lead. The Wheat Kings would stack the lines in the final minute of the period allowing Nate Danielson to find Nolan Ritchie to score off the rush to tie the game up at one heading into the 2nd period.
In the second it was the Wheat Kings depth getting on the board. Anthony Wilson would drop a pass to Roger McQueen at the stop of the circle, McQueen would wire a shot which Pats goalie Drew Sim would stop but the rebound would go right off the stick of Matt Henry and in giving the Wheat Kings their first lead of the hockey game. The goal would be Henry's 2nd of of the season. The Pats would tie it up 5 minutes later with Matteo Michaels playing the puck off the boards and off the back of Carson Bjarnason to tie it up at two. Then, less than two minutes later after a failed "Michigan" attempt by Alex Suzdalev, the puck would go to Stanislav Svozil on at the top of the right circle where he wired a shot top corner restoring the Pats lead. It was 3-2 Pats heading into the third period.
The Wheat Kings needed a strong third period and they got it with Zakhar Polshakov dropping the puck to an open Nate Danielson. Danielson would then deke out two Pats defenders to score and tie the game up at 3. The Wheat Kings would allow a season low 3 shots on goal on the Pats in the third period, but that didn't phase Connor Bedard. A shot from the point by blue liner Parker Berge would get redirected off the stick of Bedard and in to give the Pats a 4-3 lead with 1:55 to go. The Wheat Kings would send the extra attacker out but it wouldn't be enough with the Pats escaping with the victory.
