Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (40-11-2-1) got goals from seven different players on Friday night as they picked up their 10th straight win, defeating the Calgary Hitmen (20-24-5-2) at Rogers Place.
Thanks to some dogged determination, the Oil Kings were able to secure a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play against the Hitmen.
Calgary netminder Brayden Peters looked impenetrable in the opening 15 minutes stopping all 14 shots he faced from the Oil Kings, but on their 15th shot of the frame, Edmonton finally broke through.
Simon Kubicek grabbed a loose puck in the neutral-zone, faded backwards inside his own zone before quickly zipping a pass ahead to a speeding Dylan Guenther who walked his way to the front of the Calgary net and stuffed a backhand shot through the legs of Peters for his team-leading 34th goal of the season.
Just over two minutes later, Kaiden Guhle made it 2-0 as he took a pass from Justin Sourdif in the left-circle and snapped a shot over the right shoulder of Peters for his seventh goal of the campaign.
The Hitmen were not without chances of their own in the first period as rookie Oil Kings goaltender Kolby Hay repelled all 11 shots he faced from the visitors.
In the opening seven minutes of the second period, the Hitmen would take advantage of two Edmonton mistakes to quickly tie the score at two. First, Grayden Siepmann intercepted a breakout pass by the Oil Kings and sent Blake Stevenson in alone where the veteran forward tucked a backhand shot past Hay less than a minute into the period to get the visitors on the board. At 6:59, the game was tied as Oliver Tulk stripped an Oil Kings forward of the puck just inside the Edmonton blueline and elevated a shot over the shoulder of Hay.
Edmonton regained their lead as they were gifted a goal by Peters as he tried to flag down a point shot from Logan Dowhaniuk that was likely going high and wide of his net, but instead deflected into his own casg.
Shea Van Olm gave Edmonton their second two goal lead of the game as he intercepted a pass through the middle of the Hitmen zone by a Calgary defender, broke in on a two-on-zero rush and made a dazzling move to his backhand to put the puck off the post and in for his second highlight-reel goal in as many games.
In the third period, the Oil Kings would tack on three more goals to fly away with a convincing win.
Just over five minutes into the period, Cole Miller tipped home a point shot from Carter Kowalyk for his second goal in as many games. Jakub Demek gave Edmonton half-a-dozen goals just over a minute-and-a-half later as he converted on a centering pass from Josh Williams. With just five seconds left in the game, Dawson Seitz tallied his second goal in his last three games as he turned a Calgary defenceman inside-out and snapped a shot past the glove of Peters.
Hay finished the night making 19 saves for his sixth straight win while Peters made 44 saves on a season-high 51 shots from the Oil Kings. Edmonton went zero-for-two on the power play, the Hitmen were zero-for-four.
Next up, the Oil Kings open up a four-game road trip with the back half of this weekend's home-and-home series with the Hitmen as they hit at the ice at the Saddledome tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM, you can listen to the game at oilkings.ca/radio.
