Offensive Outburst from Clippers Downs Mud Hens
August 25, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Despite getting off to a hot start against Columbus, the Mud Hens dropped their second straight game to the Clippers. The Hens got off to a 3-0 lead, but the Clippers opened up the scoring in the late innings to win 9-7. In his third rehab assignment of the year with Toledo, Kyle Lobstein pitched extremely well, tiring out in the fifth inning though when he allowed his only run of the night.
The Hens jumped all over Columbus starter Ryan Merritt in the third inning. Four straight singles started the inning for Toledo, and then a Steven Moya double play knocked in the first run of the evening. With two outs, Manny Pina drove in two more runs with a single to put his team ahead 3-0. Lobstein pitched five innings while striking out three and allowing only one run.
In the sixth inning with a 3-1 lead, the wheels fell off for the Mud Hens. Warwick Saupold entered on the mound, and only lasted two-thirds of an inning while allowing four runs. Ian Krol relieved Saupold with two outs, and didn't fare so well either. He allowed three runs in the inning, and the Clippers scored seven runs in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead.
Toledo wouldn't go quietly in the bottom half of the inning. A two out rally sparked by a Jefry Marte single led the Mud Hens to a two run inning. Dean Green hit a double to drive in Marte, and then Josh Wilson knocked Green in with a double of his own. Down 9-5 in the ninth inning, the Mud Hens were able to rally for two more runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome the offensive outburst from the Clippers.
Toledo goes back to work against the Clippers at Fifth Third Field on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
