Tides Tripped in Extras

August 25, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Michael Almanzar hit a two-run homer and Sean Halton doubled twice, but Norfolk dropped a 6-5 decision to the Durham Bulls in 11 innings Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

With the score tied at 3-3, the Bulls rallied against Andy Oliver (4-2), who was facing his former team for the third time since he joined the Tides from Durham in mid-July. Tayler Motter opened the 11th inning with a single, then moved to third on a double by Richie Shaffer. Joey Butler then sliced a two-run double down the right field line, giving the Bulls a 5-3 lead. After a groundout moved Butler to third, David Lough made an outstanding sliding catch on a fly ball to left hit by Hak-Ju Lee, but Butler beat Lough's throw home for a sacrifice fly that scored Butler and made the score 6-3.

Norfolk didn't go quietly in the last of the 11th, as Audry Perez reached on a fielding error, and one out later Almanzar deposited a two-run home run into the left field picnic area for his fourth homer of the season. Julio Borbon followed with a single, but Kirby Yates (1-2) retired the final two batters to end the contest and send the Tides (73-57) to their sixth loss in seven games.

The Tides had trailed the contest 3-1 entering the sixth but rallied back against Durham's bullpen to send the game to extras. Christian Walker hit a run-scoring two-out double in the sixth inning to pull the Tides within a run, and one inning later Sharlon Schoop plated Halton with a two-out single to knot the game at 3-3.

Halton had two doubles, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base in the contest to pace Norfolk's 12-hit attack, as every Tides starter registered a hit in the contest.

Norfolk starter Terry Doyle turned in his fourth Quality Start in five outings with the Tides as he yielded three runs on six hits over six innings of work. Doyle, who entered play tied for second in Minor League Baseball with 14 wins this season, matched his season-high with three walks but struck out five while throwing 55 of his 90 pitches for strikes.

Despite the loss, Norfolk maintained its 3.0 game lead over Gwinnett in the IL South, as the Braves dropped a 7-2 decision at Charlotte. Eight of Norfolk's final 14 games are against the G-Braves.

The Tides wrap up their penultimate regular season homestand Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 12:05. Left-hander Chris Jones (8-6, 2.84) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Braden Hagens (2-5, 3.22).
