Offense Falls Flat in Loss After 5-Run First
July 19, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (51-48) are still winless since the All-Star Break, as they managed just four hits after a five-run first inning in a 9-5 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs (52-48). Omaha has lost 9 of the 11 meetings with New Orleans this season, their worst record against any PCL opponent.
The Chasers stormed out to that 5-0 lead powered by Matt Fields' two-run double, giving him a team-leading 58 RBI, and back-to-back home runs by Justin Maxwell and Francisco Pena. Pena's solo homer to cap off the rally was his team-leading 19th of the year, adding to his already career high mark which ranks tied for second in the PCL. Pena was a triple shy of the cycle in the game, and has four homers in his last five appearances.
After the offensive outburst, the Omaha bats fell silent while the Zephyrs chipped away at the lead with a run in the second and three runs in the fifth. In the seventh New Orleans put up a five spot of their own thanks in part to a crucial baserunning play by Jake Marisnick, who broke up a potential inning-ending double play for the Chasers. The Zephyrs went on to hit a pair of two-out homers later in the frame, a three-run shot by Kyle Jensen and a two-run shot by Josh Rodriguez.
The loss was Omaha's first this season at Werner Park in a game started by Aaron Brooks in eight total outings, as the right-hander left with the lead after five innings, and only their third loss in his 15 starts in 2014. Christian Colon extended his on-base streak in home games to 18 with a multi-hit game, the longest streak by any Omaha player this season.
The Chasers will look to avoid the sweep as they send out LHP John Lamb (4-8, 3.91 ERA), who struck out a career-high 11 in his last appearance before the All-Star Break. He will face off with Marlins prospect Anthony DeSclafani (2-2, 2.82 ERA), with first pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
