Redbirds Sweep Doubleheader against Sky Sox

July 19, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Two home runs was all the Memphis Redbirds (48-49) needed to sweep Saturday's doubleheader against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (42-56).

Despite solid complete game outings from RHP Jair Jurrjens (0-1) and LHP Pedro Hernandez (6-5), the Sky Sox lost the first game, 1-0, and second game, 2-0, thanks to key home runs by the Redbirds. The doubleheader marked the eighth and ninth times that the Sky Sox have been shutout this season, and just the fourth time in franchise history the Sky Sox were blanked in both games of a doubleheader.

In the first game, Jurrjens was matching RHP Zach Petrick (6-4) shutout before the 28-year-old veteran gave up a solo shot to Randal Grichuk (17) in the bottom of the sixth inning.

It was Xavier Scruggs who delivered the power for Memphis in the second game with his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the third inning.

Both of Memphis' starting pitchers, Petrick and RHP Boone Whiting (3-6), fired seven-inning shutouts. Each allowed just two hits with a walk, while Petrick struck out six and Whiting struck out three.

Jurrjens tossed six innings and allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out one. Hernandez struck out four batters and walked two, while allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work.

The Sky Sox will look to avoid a series sweep against Memphis at 5:05 p.m. (MT) Sunday evening with RHP Brett Tomko (2-2, 6.26 ERA) squaring off Redbirds LHP John Gast (2-2, 6.61 ERA).
