
Offense Erupts in 9-7 Win to Take Series

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - An offensive eruption by the Clinton LumberKings was enough for a 9-7 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday afternoon. The win marked the LumberKings (23-13, 56-49) first series win of the season against the Kernels (20-16, 58-48).
Clinton scored their runs early and then held on against late rallies by Cedar Rapids. The LumberKings scored the game's first runs in the top of the second inning with a pair of unearned runs against Kernels starter Tyler Palm.
The lead was added to in the top of the third inning. The LumberKings broke out for four runs for their largest rally of the game. J.D. Osborne chased home the first two runs and Davis Bradshaw capped the rally with an RBI single.
The support was more than enough for Jake Walters. Over six innings of work he allowed one run on four hits while walking one and striking out five. For his time Walters (3-3) ran his wining-streak to three.
Palm (2-7) was hung with the loss. Over his 4.2 innings he allowed six runs, two earned, on seven hits while walking none and striking out three.
Cedar Rapids offense came late. After tallying a single run in the second inning they did not score again until a two-run Alex Isola home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Clinton though answered the Kernels with single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Zach Scott homered for his second time of the year in the sixth and the LumberKings held on from there.
Zach Wolf held on to the Clinton lead which shrunk to two runs after Cedar Rapids struck for two runs in the seventh inning, three runs in the eighth, and one more run in the ninth. Wolf earned the save when he left the tying run on at first base in the bottom of the ninth.
The LumberKings will continue their road trip with the first game of a four-game set with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday night. Clinton will throw righty Tanner Andrews (4-4, 3.93) while Wisconsin will tap righty Fresis Adames (2-1, 3.11). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. (CDT).
