TinCaps Slay Dragons on Princess Night, Take Series
July 29, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps slayed the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds affiliate), 7-1, on Princess Night Monday at the palatial palace that is Parkview Field. With the victory, Fort Wayne has won three consecutive series at home.
'Caps starter Joey Cantillo continued his stellar season with another quality start. The 19-year-old left-hander from Hawaii held Dayton (15-21, 43-63) to one run over six innings. Cantillo struck out six and worked around four hits and two walks. For the season, San Diego's No. 19 prospect leads the Midwest League in ERA (2.05) and strikeouts (121), among other categories. Making his performance on Monday all the more impressive is that it came after a 1 hour and 25-minute rain delay.
But despite the initial weather, the TinCaps (13-23, 46-58) shined in their green, "prince charming"-esque special jerseys for the theme night. Third baseman Ethan Skender chopped a two-run single in the second to open the scoring. Second baseman Tucupita Marcano added an RBI groundout later in the frame against Dragons starter Lyon Richardson, who only threw 43 pitches over two innings.
Dwanya Williams-Sutton, making his first pro appearance in center field, hit a solo home run to left field in the third to make it 3-1 after Dayton scored a run in the top of the inning. Williams-Sutton extended his on-base streak to 17 games. His .408 on-base percentage for the season leads the MWL. He was also hit by a pitch for a league-high 20th time.
Fort Wayne stretched its lead to 5-1 in the fifth as left fielder Michael Curry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Lefty Cody Tyler followed Cantillo with two perfect innings of relief and righty Moises Lugo made his TinCaps debut with a clean ninth.
