July 29, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps scored three runs in the second inning and three Fort Wayne pitchers combined to allow only five hits as the TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-1 on Monday night. The start of the game was delayed by rain for one hour, 27 minutes. Fort Wayne won two-of-three in the series.
Fort Wayne bunched four of their seven hits on the night in the second inning, taking a 3-0 lead. The Dragons had a chance at a big inning in the top of the third when they loaded the bases with no outs on a walk to Nate Scantlin and back-to-back singles by Randy Ventura and Mariel Bautista. Miles Gordon's sacrifice fly brought in Scantlin to make it 3-1, but Brian Rey grounded into a double play to end the threat. The Dragons had only two more base runners over the remaining six innings of the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Lyon Richardson (2-8) was charged with the loss. He worked just two innings on a low pitch limit. He allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Richardson threw 43 pitches.
Adrian Rodriguez replaced Richardson to start the third inning. Rodriguez surrendered two runs in three innings of work, allowing two hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Rodriguez hit two batters in the fifth inning including one with the bases loaded to force in a run. Eddy Demurias had a strong outing in relief of Rodriguez, working two scoreless innings with four strikeouts, allowing just one hit. Matt Pidich pitched a perfect inning, striking out two.
Bautista had two hits to lead the Dragons offensively. Dayton scored 13 runs in the first two innings of the series on Saturday, but scored only three more in the remaining 25 innings of the set.
Up Next: The Dragons (15-21, 43-63) return home to Fifth Third Field to open a four-game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods (23-13, 62-44) on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Nick Lodolo (0-0, 3.00), the Cincinnati Reds 2019 first round draft pick, will start for the Dragons against Bowling Green's Matthew Liberatore (6-1, 2.81). Liberatore was the 2018 first round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays.
