Cubs Finish Series Strong and Sweep Lugnuts in 17-8 Finale
July 29, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release
Lansing, MI: To say the past few games against the Lansing Lugnuts have been three of the most important days of the 2019 season for the South Bend Cubs is an understatement.
The Cubs started the series one game back of the Lugnuts for the Eastern Division wild card spot. And they will leave the state of Michigan two games ahead of Lansing for the wild card. In a sweep of the Lugnuts, South Bend put together three of their most complete performances of the season all in a row. In the three games, the Cubs won 6-0, 13-4, and 17-8.
The series finale on Monday featured a matinee with South Bend's All-Star right-hander Riley Thompson on the mound. Knowing they had one of their aces on the rubber, the offense continued its dominant stretch by scoring 13 runs in the first four innings.
Setting the tone at the top of the Cubs order were middle infielders Clayton Daniel and Andy Weber. Both players produced five hit days and were part of South Bend's four run second inning. Daniel smashed a triple to the wall in center field and Weber doubled to extend the Cubs lead at the time to 5-0.
Thompson worked around a couple of early Lansing jams to put together a winning day. The tall righty out of Louisville picked up his seventh win of the year with five innings and two earned runs allowed. Thompson also added four strikeouts.
Lansing started to creep their way back in the game after they scored at least one run from the 4th through 8th innings. Even with the Lugnuts rally, South Bend continued to do everything right on Monday, as they had an answer of their own.
In the top of the 9th, top Chicago Cubs outfield prospects Brennen Davis and Cole Roederer both hit two run home runs to bring the South Bend lead to 17-8. In the bottom of the 9th, Brian Glowicki sent the Lugnuts down 1-2-3 to finish the game.
Also making headlines on Monday was Buddy Bailey. The South Bend manager picked up the 2,123rd victory of his career. With today's win, Bailey passes Bill Clymer for 7th place on the all-time MiLB Manager wins list. With another spot passed, Bailey is now just five wins away from tying Larry Gilbert for 6th place.
Not only did the Cubs pick up the rare road sweep, but they have over a week of home cooking to look forward to. South Bend will begin an eight game homestand tomorrow night at Four Winds Field against the West Michigan Whitecaps with first pitch at 7:05 PM. The Cubs have their record up to 56-48 in the middle of their best baseball of the season.
