COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons entered Monday night's series finale in search of a perfect 6-0 road trip and an eighth straight win overall. Unfortunately, Brad Bass and the West Michigan Whitecaps saved their best stuff for the final day of the series and won 9-1.

Bass was making his sixth start of the season and delivered his second consecutive scoreless start of at least seven innings. The 23-year-old is a returner to the Midwest League and proved why he's had stints in higher levels of the Tigers' system in his career. Bass (W, 3-2) threw seven scoreless innings ceding just four hits and two walks while throwing 104 pitches.

While Bass was keeping Loons hitters off-balance, the West Michigan offense was getting to the Great Lakes pitching staff early and often. The Whitecaps pushed Loons starter Robinson Ortiz out of the game in the third inning after plating one in the second inning and four more in the third. Ortiz (L, 1-5) was coming off his best start of the season (7.2 IP, 0 ER vs. Dayton on Wednesday) but couldn't repeat that performance on Monday night.

West Michigan added three more runs in the eighth inning on an RBI-double from Dayton Dugas and a two-run single from Parker Meadows. Jasiel Alvino retired six in a row before allowing those three earned runs.

With the loss, the Loons finish their road trip with a 5-1 record after sweeping the Dayton Dragons and taking two-of-three off the Whitecaps. The Loons have still won 14 of their last 19 games and still hold the best overall record in all of the Midwest League (64-39).

Great Lakes returns home to begin a four-game set at Dow Diamond against the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Tuesday night. Gates open at 6:00 with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT.
