
Slugfest Completes Cubs' Sweep, 17-8

LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (17-19, 49-56) allowed season highs in hits and runs in a 17-8 loss to the South Bend Cubs (19-17, 56-48) on Monday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Cubs built a 13-1 lead with a run in the first inning, four in the second, two in the third and six in the fourth inning. The Lugnuts responded with solo tallies in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, and a three-run eighth to pull within 13-8.
Brennen Davis and Cole Roederer hit two-run homers in the ninth off Cre Finfrock for the final margin.
Clayton Daniel and Andy Weber, the Cubs' first and second batters in the order, each went 5-for-6, helping South Bend amass 20 base hits in addition to seven walks.
Lugnuts starter Juan De Paula (Loss, 3-5) lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits and four walks.
South Bend starter Riley Thompson (Win, 7-5) gave up three runs, two earned, in five innings, including a solo home run to Jake Brodt. It was Brodt's second straight game with a home run and his 12th overall this season.
In the losing cause, Otto Lopez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, Gabriel Moreno finished 2-for-5 with a two-run triple and two runs scored, and Griffin Conine and Ryan Gold each added two-hit showings.
The Lugnuts next travel to Lake County and Bowling Green on an eight-game road trip stretching through August 6th.
