Netminder Makes 43 Saves To Lift Phantoms Past Monarchs
January 23, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PHILADELPHIA - Scott Munroe was once again stellar in net, stopping 43 shots to carry the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 2-1 win over the Manchester Monarchs at the Wachovia Spectrum. Michael Ratchuk's power-play goal late in the first period was the difference as the Phantoms picked up their fifth win in their last six games.
Just past the halfway point of the first period, Matt Clackson got the Phantoms on the board with his second tally of the season. The Phantoms broke out on a three-on-two rush led by Nate Raduns, who was streaking down the middle with the puck. Raduns fed Rob Bellamy a pass on the left wing and Bellamy's wrist shot was kicked out by Monarchs netminder Jonathan Bernier. Clackson picked up the rebound and sent a backhander into the net to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead.
With 1:43 to go in the first, the Phantoms doubled their lead on Ratchuk's tally. The rookie defenseman was barely able to hold the puck in the offensive zone at the blue line after receiving a pass from Jonathan Matsumoto before firing a slap shot over the right shoulder of Bernier to give the Phantoms a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
The Monarchs finally beat Munroe with 3:06 left in the second frame. Justin Azevedo sent a pass from behind the net to Scott Parse, who was camped out in the slot in front of Munroe, and Parse one-timed the puck through Munroe's legs to make it a 2-1 game.
Parse's goal was all the scoring Philadelphia would allow. Munroe and the Phantoms penalty kill unit played spectacularly in the third to preserve the one goal lead and shut down a potent Manchester offense. Munroe made save after save on a Monarchs 5-on-3 power play opportunity that lasted over 90 seconds, and also kept Manchester off of the board when Jared Ross received a two minute delay of game penalty with just 2:44 to go. The Phantoms penalty kill ended the night a perfect 6-for-6.
Munroe finished the evening with 43 saves on 44 shots, earning the win and the game's first star honors. Bernier stopped 19 of 21 in the loss.
The Phantoms continue their six-game homestand tomorrow night with a 7:05 faceoff against the Lake Erie Monsters at the Wachovia Spectrum. Comcast-Spectacor and the Philadelphia Phantoms are now offering an amazing $10 adult ticket price for all remaining home games for the Phantoms final season at the Wachovia Spectrum, while all tickets for kids 14 and under are now $5.
