Wheeling Nailers News Release

Cincinnati, OH - The Wheeling Nailers four game winning streak came to a close Wednesday night at the Cincinnati Cyclones in a 3-2 loss to the North Division leaders. Wheeling missed an opportunity to move into a tie for the division lead with the loss.

All the goals for both sides were scored on special teams with the Cyclones getting a power play goal and a shorthanded goal from Maxime Lacroix. Thomas Beauregard scored his team leading 28th goal and Chris Davis appeared to score his 6th of the year although the tally was initially credited to Mitch Ganzak. Beauregard extended his point streak to 11 games with his 10th goal in the stretch.

Wheeling falls to 25-19-3 with the setback and stays in a 4th place tie in the American Conference with Charlotte and Kalamazoo. The Cyclones improve to 28-17-1 and stay all alone atop the North Division standings.

Maxime Lacroix gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead late in the 1st period on a power play goal over the shoulder of Adam Berkhoel. Mark Voakes picked up a rebound to the side of the crease and jammed it in behind Berkhoel early in the 2nd period to stretch the advantage to 2-0.

Wheeling's Chris Davis appeared to muscle his way through a defender and force home a backhander past Jeremy Smith after receiving the pass from Jordan Fox to get the Nailers on the board at 12:11 of the 2nd period. The goal was credited for Mitch Ganzak but may be later changed for Davis.

Thomas Beauregard picked up a rebound on the left-wing side of the crease and slammed it behind Smith to tie the game at 2-2 at 15:46 of the 2nd period. It was Beauregard's team leading 28th goal of the year. The Nailers had a golden opportunity to take their first lead of the night as they would continue on the power play. But Dustin Sproat stole a puck in the neutral zone and found a cutting Lacroix speeding into the zone shorthanded who was able to blast home his 2nd of the night and 10th of the season for the game-winner.

The Nailers blasted away in the 3rd period to try to get the equalizer and outshot the Cyclones 11-1 in the final frame but just couldn't get the bounce to tie it again.

Both teams went 2-for-8 on the power play. Wheeling outshot the Cyclones 33-23. The Nailers are 1-2-0 at U.S. Bank Arena and are 3-5-0 against Cincinnati this year with four more encounters in the regular season including three more back in the Queen City at the end of February.
