
Salmon Kings Edge Grizzlies In A Shootout

Victoria, BC - In a Wednesday evening matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Utah Grizzlies met for the first of a three-game set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria's Glenn Fisher got the nod in net while Utah started Beau Erickson.
Utah jumped out to a quick lead while on the power play at 2:28 into the first period. Ryan Kinasewich fired a shot from the left boards that was stopped by Fisher with Dylan Hunter burying the rebound into the open net. For Hunter it was his 12th goal of the season. The Salmon Kings replied with two goals in 24 seconds. The first goal was scored by Chad Painchaud who picked up the loose puck in the slot and released a quick wrist shot past the right pad of Erickson. The goal marked Painchaud's 19th of the campaign. The second goal was registered by Patrick Coulombe on the power play. The Victoria defenseman fired a wrist shot from the top of the left face-off circle that deflected off of a Utah defender and past the glove of Erickson. Mitch O'Keefe would replace Erickson between the pipes for the Grizzlies. Victoria jumped to a 3-1 lead while shorthanded at the 16:28 mark. On a tremendous individual effort Olivier Filion broke into the offensive zone down the right boards. The Salmon Kings' forward went into the corner and carried the puck in front of the net and patiently out-waited O'Keefe to put the puck past the blocker side of the Grizzlies' netminder. It was Filion's ninth tally of the season. Victoria led 3-1 through 20 minutes of play.
Victoria extended their lead to 4-1 on Adam Taylor's seventh goal of the campaign. Jimmy Sharrow released a wrist shot from the high-slot that was saved by O'Keefe with Taylor sliding the puck under the goalkeeper from the left side of the net. Utah cut their deficit to two at the 8:33 mark when A.J. Perry fired a shot from in front of the net that beat Fisher under the right pad. The goal was Perry's 18th of the season. Victoria responded at the 12:44 mark when the Salmon Kings broke out on a three-on-two. Painchaud carried the puck down the right wing into the Utah zone. He fed Randall Gelech in the slot, and the Victoria forward released a wrist shot past O'Keefe's glove. Utah rounded out the second period scoring on a point shot from Matt Clarke that beat Fisher glove side. Victoria took their 5-3 lead into the third period.
Utah scored their fourth goal of the game at the 2:02 mark. Matt Sorteberg fired a shot from the top of the right face-off circle that a hit a body in front of the net, with Hunter pouncing on the rebound for his second tally of the evening. The Salmon Kings responded on Gelech's second goal of the night and 14th of the campaign. The Victoria forward picked up a loose puck in the slot and wired a wrist shot past the glove of the Utah netminder. The Grizzlies scored two goals under a minute apart from Tom May and Kinasewich to send the game into overtime tied 6-6.
Overtime ended deadlocked as the game went to a shootout. After three rounds of the shootout both teams had collected two goals (Wes Goldie and Olivier Latendresse for Victoria, and Peter Aston and Perry for Utah). The Salmon Kings sent out Mike Hamilton as their fourth shooter who buried his wrist shot blocker side on O'Keefe. Fisher denied Kinasewich to secure the victory for the home team. Salmon Kings 7 Grizzlies 6 in a shootout.
Victoria went 1/3 33.3% on the power play while Utah was 2/3 66.7%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Grizzlies 36-33.
The Salmon Kings and Grizzlies continue their three-game set Friday and Saturday night in Victoria with puck drop for both games at 7:05 p.m. During both games the Salmon Kings will be continuing to auction off Chad Painchaud's and Adam Taylor's game-worn "Pink in the Rink" sweaters with all proceeds donated to the BC Cancer Foundation.
