
Stingrays' Special Teams Shine In 6-3 Loss To Cyclones

Cincinnati, OH - Forward Keith Johnson potted a goal and an assist as the South Carolina Stingrays (30-13-4-4) fell 6-3 to the Cincinnati Cyclones (29-17-0-1) in front of 1,864 at U.S. Bank Arena Thursday night.
The Cyclones opened the scoring at 1:20 of the first period with an unassisted marker from forward Jimmy Kilpatrick. Cincinnati quickly made it 2-0 off a drive from forward Maxime Lacroix beating Stingrays goaltender Shane Connelly at 3:32. Defensemen Brett Motherwell and Brian O'Hanley assisted Lacroix's 11 goal of the season. Cyclones forward Brett Robinson gave Cincinnati a three-goal lead at 16:22 from rookie Matt Pierce and Lacroix.
Cincinnati continued the scoring in the second period with Lacroix's second goal of the night at 14:43 from defenseman Scott Marchesi and Pierce. The Stingrays responded with a power-play tally from forward Trent Campbell at 17:22 beating Cyclones goaltender Robert Mayer with a wrist shot between the legs. Johnson and defenseman Jason Fredricks recorded assists.
The Stingrays cut the lead in half at 1:13 of the third period with an unassisted blast from Johnson beating Mayer low stick-side. Lacroix netted the hat trick at 6:45 from Pierce and Robinson to give the Cyclones a 5-2 lead. Pierce added a goal of his own at 14:35 from forward Mark Voakes and Robinson. Stingrays forward Matt Scherer added a late power-play goal at 17:29 from forwards Spencer Carbery and Michael Dubuc to complete the game scoring. Connelly suffers his eighth loss of the season stopping 27 of 33 Cyclones shots. Mayer earned his second straight win against the Stingrays kicking away 20 of 23 opportunities. The Cyclones finished the night 0-for-2 on the power play while the Stingrays ended the contest 2-for-4.
