Wheeling Nailers News Release

CINCINNATI, OH - The Wheeling Nailers were unable to tie a team record with their eighth straight road win on Saturday night, but they did pick up another valuable standings point. After falling behind 2-0 to the Cincinnati Cyclones, the Nailers battled back to force overtime with a pair of goals by Clark Seymour. However, the extra point went to Cincinnati, as Branden Gracel snapped the deadlock at 1:24 of the bonus session for a 3-2 Cyclones win at US Bank Arena.

The first period was slow to develop, as the two teams combined for 14 shots on goal. There was only one puck that found the back of the net, and the tally went to the Cyclones with 1:35 remaining. Seth Ambroz took a shot from the top of the right circle, which was deflected into the net by Peter Quenneville in the low slot.

Cincinnati added to its advantage at the 12:53 mark of the middle frame. The Nailers had a difficult time getting the puck out of the defensive zone, and the opposition's top line capitalized. Zach Budish took the puck in the trapezoid, dishing a pass into the left circle for Joe Wilson, who powered a one-timer into the top-right corner of the cage. With 2:24 left to go, Wheeling began to make a comeback with a power play goal. Andrew Cerretani slid a pass through the slot to Jordan Kwas, who redirected the feed to Clark Seymour at the left point. Seymour, who drew the penalty, let a wrist shot go, finding the twine through traffic.

The Nailers ultimately battled their way back to tie the game in the third period, once again utilizing the man advantage. Mathew Maione rushed the puck into the offensive zone, leaving off a pass for Riley Brace. Brace loaded the cannon for Clark Seymour, who drove in a one-timer for his second tally of the night. Wheeling had a glorious chance to settle the contest in regulation, but came up empty on a two-minute 5-on-3, as overtime became necessary for the second straight night.

In the extra session, the home team got the bonus point. Branden Gracel's initial shot from the left circle got blocked, but he followed up that chance, squeezing a backhander in for the winning tally in a 3-2 decision in favor of the Cyclones.

Brad Thiessen got the victory in goal for Cincinnati, making 28 saves on 30 shots. Brian Foster played well, but received the overtime defeat, despite stopping 30 of the 33 shots he faced.

The Nailers will conclude the week on Saturday, when they visit the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:00. Wheeling will then return home for a Two for Tuesday (Buy One, Get One Free) against the Toledo Walleye at 7:05. Kids tickets will be $5 that evening, courtesy of McDonald's. Other exciting upcoming promotions include Duck Dynasty Night Starring Si Robertson on April 1st, and a visit by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders on April 2nd.
