Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, W.Va. - Erik Johnson and Bryan Ewing became the most recent Wheeling Nailers to play in the AHL. The Nailers forwards faced each other in their AHL debuts on Sunday when the Norfolk Admirals played the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Ewing and the Penguins defeated the Admirals, 5-0. Johnson and Ewing became the 11th and 12th Nailers to play in the AHL this season. Ewing has been one of five Nailers to play for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.
A 5-foot-9 forward from Coon Rapids, Minn., Johnson is currently sixth on the Nailers with 30 points (12G, 18A). Ewing, a native of Wheeling, W.Va., is the Nailers top scorer with 30 goals and 31 assists. His 61 points are currently second best in the ECHL. He was returned to the Nailers on Monday.
In addition to Johnson, forward Aaron Clarke was loaned to Binghamton on Feb. 6. Clarke has scored one goal with one assist in 10 total games in the AHL this season. He was initially loaned to Binghamton on Dec. 26, 2008, returned to play one game with the Nailers, and was then loaned to Providence. He is currently the Nailers fifth leading scorer with nine goals and 24 assists (33 points).
The Nailers also signed center John Mazzei on Monday. A 5-foot-9, 170-pound native of Kelowna, BC, Mazzei, played four years of NCAA hockey at Bowling Green State University where he was teammates with current Nailer Ben Geelan. Mazzei played in 38 games with the New Mexico scorpions of the CHL this season, scoring six goals with five assists.
The Nailers begin an eight game road trip on Wednesday with a contest against the Trenton Devils. The Nailers return to home ice on Friday, Feb. 27 when they face the Dayton Bombers at 7:35 p.m. That game is a Friday Family Four Pack Night, where families can purchase four tickets, four hotdogs and four sodas for the low price of $44. In addition, the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a free collector poster.
