South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, SC - Nate Kiser scored a late goal for the South Carolina Stingrays in the third period, but it was not enough as they fell to the Charlotte Checkers by a score of 4-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"We came out flat," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "There were points in the game where we played hard, but I thought for good portions of it we were just flat; and this game was too important for that to happen."

The Rays had to play from behind in the first period after giving up the first goal to the Checkers. After Chris Capraro was pulled down from behind on a breakaway, he was awarded a penalty shot and scored with a quick wrister past Stingrays goalie Jonathan Boutin. But the Rays would tie things up just over two minutes later on Maxime Lacroix's 23rd goal of the year. The goal came after Michael Dubuc brought the puck in the zone and got off a shot on Maxime Daigneault who kicked the puck right on to the stick of Lacroix who banged it home. The goal came at 13:22 and was assisted by Dubuc and Nate Kiser.

The Rays took their first lead of the night in the second period. After Pierre-Luc O'Brien won the face-off, he slipped the puck over to Jeff Corey who used his speed to get into the zone and get a shot off on the side of the net. Trent Campbell, who was trailing on the play, grabbed the rebound and slipped it past Daigneault for his third goal since returning to the Rays from the AHL, and his ninth goal of the season. The goal came at 8:10 and was assisted by Corey and O'Brien. The Checkers would tie the game at two on Capraro's second goal of the game, a perfectly placed shot over the glove hand of Boutin. At 15:39, Brad Ralph gave the Checkers their second lead of the night, at 3-2. After Jeff Miles brought the puck in the zone, he fired a shot on Boutin who knocked it away, but it was quickly picked up by Ralph who scored his ninth goal of the year, and his fifth against the Rays.

The Rays found themselves trailing by two when Michele Leveille scored his 10th goal of the year, on the power play, to make the score 4-2 with 5:50 left to go in the game. Kiser would draw the Rays to within one, after getting his fifth goal of the year at 15:55. Kiser took his patented slap shot from the near side point which made its way past Daigneault to make it a 4-3 game. The goal was assisted by O'Brien and Campbell. With just over a minute to play, Bednar pulled Boutin in favor of the extra attacker, and although they peppered the net with shots, they could not get the equalizer before the final horn sounded.

The winning goaltender was Daigneault who stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Boutin who stopped 21 of the 25 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-2 on the power play while killing off three of the five short handed situations they faced.

The Rays will be back on Saturday night as they travel to Duluth, GA to take on the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 P.M. You can hear the game live on ESPN Radio 910 the TEAM starting with the Benitos Pre-game show beginning at 6:50.
