Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that defenseman Patrik Hersley ["HERZ lee"] has been assigned to Reading by the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL. In a separate transaction, defenseman Patrick Wellar has been recalled by the Hershey Bears of the AHL.
Hersley (6'3/205) (22), who hails from Malmo, Sweden, played twenty regular season games in two separate stints with the Royals last year, scoring three goals (including an overtime game winner against the Elmira Jackals on December 26, 2007), assisting on fifteen others (eighteen points) and picking up eighteen penalty minutes. Hersley also registered nine points (1g-8a) in forty-two regular season games with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL last year. On April 4, 2008, Hersley was once again was assigned to Reading, where he played all thirteen ECHL playoff games for the team. During that playoff stint, Hersley scored three goals (including a dramatic late game unassisted short-handed goal, which iced the Royals' win in Game One of the North Division Finals against the Cincinnati Cyclones) and assisted on six others (nine points) and led the team by playing to a plus-four (+4). During the off-season, Hersley was traded (along with former Royal teammate Ned Lukacevic) by the Los Angeles Kings to the Philadelphia Flyers for Denis Gauthier and a second round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. This season, Hersley has been limited to five games with the Phantoms due to injury.
Wellar played 6 games in his most recent stint with the Royals, scoring his first goal of the season-the overtime game winner for the Royals in Trenton on Saturday night-and assisting on four others. In twenty-five games with the Royals this year, Wellar has registered a total of eight points (1g-7a) and picked up forty-seven penalty minutes. In seventeen games with the Bears this season, Wellar has assisted on two goals, picked up thirty penalty minutes and played to a plus-five (+5).
The Royals season long seven game road trip continues Friday night (February 13 @ 7:05 pm et) when the team travels to Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to face the Johnstown Chiefs.
