Mrazek Named CCM/AHL Player of the Week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The American Hockey League announced on Monday that Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Petr Mrazek has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending March 1.

Last week, Mrazek backstopped the Griffins to three consecutive wins on the road, beginning with a 31-save performance in Tuesday's 6-2 victory at Iowa. The Ostrava, Czech Republic, native then turned out consecutive shutouts against the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday (25 saves) and the Chicago Wolves on Saturday (27 saves). Mrazek's shutout on Saturday was the Griffins' fifth on the road this season, breaking the franchise record of four set in 2002-03.

Just the third Griffin to ever record back-to-back road shutouts, Mrazek currently owns a shutout streak of 144:28. Mrazek's run comes on the heels of a 26-save blanking of the Hamilton Bulldogs on Feb. 24, giving the third-year Griffin three shutouts in his last four games. He has allowed just two goals in his last 247:21 played for a 0.49 goals against average and a 0.983 save percentage (117-119) during that span.

After being assigned to Grand Rapids by the Detroit Red Wings on Feb. 17, Mrazek's unyielding performance in net has helped the Griffins tie a franchise record with seven consecutive road wins. In addition, the team has earned 30 of 34 possible points over its last 17 games dating to Jan. 23 and closed out the month of February without a regulation loss (10-0-2-0).

The 23-year-old Mrazek has spent the majority of this season with Detroit, accumulating a 13-5-1 record in 20 games, alongside a 2.55 GAA, a 0.909 save percentage and one shutout. He has also played in 11 games with the Griffins, earning an 8-2-0 record, a 2.07 GAA and a 0.924 save percentage. Detroit's fifth choice (141st overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Mrazek helped Grand Rapids to its first-ever Calder Cup in 2012-13, turning out a 15-9 record with a 2.31 GAA and four shutouts in the playoffs.

Mrazek previously earned AHL Player of the Week honors on Feb. 4, 2013, after he won his AHL All-Star Game debut and earned his first professional shutout. He's one of 16 Griffins who have been named AHL Player of the Week, and his accomplishment marks the first time in franchise history that two Grand Rapids goaltenders have earned the honor during the same season. Exactly one month ago, Jared Coreau was named the AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 1.

In addition to Mrazek and Coreau, three other goaltenders in franchise history have earned the honor: Jimmy Howard (Jan. 25, 2009 and March 20, 2006), Joey MacDonald (Feb. 16, 2004) and Marc Lamothe (Nov. 18, 2002).

In recognition of his achievement, Mrazek will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Griffins home game.
